Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw worked fine as a scanner and printer for a year. Now it doesn't appear to recognize that it is a multi-functional device that includes a scanner. Printer works fine. I've searched and updated firmware, drivers, etc. Searches do not find any scanner device component as part of this MFC device.

@AZSundevil, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw scanner issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Let's try a few steps to get the scanner portion of your Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw back up and running.
Restart the Printer and Computer
Sometimes a simple restart helps refresh the connection between the printer and computer:
- Turn off your printer and computer.
- Unplug the printer from the power source and wait about 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
Check Windows or macOS Settings
Make sure your computer recognizes the scanner:
- On Windows:
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Right-click on the printer → Properties → Look for a scanner tab or option.
- On macOS:
- Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners → See if the scanner is listed separately.
Update or Reinstall the Scanner Drivers
It’s possible that the scanner driver got corrupted or removed during an update:
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest full feature driver package for your model.
- During installation, choose Full Installation to include both printing and scanning functions.
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor
HP has a tool designed to troubleshoot issues like this:
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP website.
- Run the tool and follow the instructions.
Try a Different Connection Method
If you're using Wi-Fi, try connecting the printer with a USB cable or via Ethernet to see if that helps the scanner get detected.
Let me know how it goes or if you need more help! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
