I'm trying to scan some documents and I keep getting the following:
Scanner reported an error HP2540 series is currently unavailable. Please check if it is connected or turned on and try again later
I went into the settings and I couldn't do anything with Scan to Computer but Webscan seemed available but I don't even know what that is. I tried it, it seemed to scan but there was no option to save. So I don't know if it scanned or where to find the documents. I did turn off the printer and turn it back on. This happens occasionally and there is no rhyme or reason to when and why as far as I can tell.
Any ideas on how to get it to work again?

Hi @clenny,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you cannot scan with your HP Deskjet 2540 printer on Mac OS X. I am happy to look into this scanning issue for you!
Some questions for starters:
- Are you able to make copies with your printer? Copy Text or Mixed Documents.
- What version of Mac OS X are you using? If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos.
- How is the printer connected? Wireless or USB?
In the meantime, please see this scanning guide, A 'Scanner Unreachable' or 'An error occurred while scanning' Message Displays for HP Deskjet 1510, ....
Hope this helps, and hope to hear from you soon!

Hi clenny,
Thank you for answering my questions!
I would definitely still go through this guide, A 'Scanner Unreachable' or 'An error occurred while scanning' Message Displays for HP Deskjet 1510, ....
As well, I would recommend this guide, Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. This will help you maintain the connection.
One last suggestion, is to make sure you have the HP Deskjet 2540 driver selected as default and not the AirPrint driver.
Please see images below:
Substitute the HP Photosmart / Laserjet printer shown in the images for your HP Deskjet 2540 printer.
Hope this will clear things up for you!
