Won’t scan to Mac computer (OS 14, Sonoma). I downloaded and installed new printer/scanner software several times. Used Easy Start to re-install and it showed scanning software as “not installed.” I installed it, but when I tried the scan test I got the message “Printer is Busy.” Tried scanning from printer button and get message “make sure computer is connected.” Won’t work either on wi-fi or with USB connection. Went online to HP but their Scan Doctor software is only for Windows! NO HELP from HP!

Hi @MaryEllenMojo,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing scanning issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 on your Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma). This problem is often due to compatibility issues or software conflicts.
Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Outdated firmware can cause compatibility problems. To update your printer's firmware:
- Go to the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Drivers and Software page.
- Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.
Reset the Printing System on Your Mac:
- Resetting the printing system can resolve various issues:
- Navigate to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click on the printer list and select Reset printing system.
- This action will remove all printers, so you'll need to add your OfficeJet Pro 8710 again.
Reinstall HP Software: Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer series
- Uninstall any existing HP software or drivers.
- Use the HP Easy Start utility to reinstall the latest software and drivers compatible with your macOS version.
Use the HP Smart App: HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
- The HP Smart App can assist with scanning tasks:
- Download the HP Smart App from the Mac App Store.
- Add your printer within the app and attempt to scan.
Check Firewall and Security Software:
- Security software can sometimes interfere with scanning:
- Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software.
- Attempt to scan again. If successful, adjust your security software settings to allow scanning operations.
Ensure Network Stability:
- Confirm that both your Mac and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Avoid using USB hubs; connect the printer directly to your Mac if using a USB connection.
Use Alternative Scanning Applications:
- If issues persist, try using alternative scanning applications like Apple's Image Capture:
- Open Image Capture on your Mac.
- Select your printer from the list of devices and attempt to scan.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
