I think this is more an HP issue. They need to update their drivers to be compatible with new MacOS to allow Scan to computer functionality. Simply put there easy scan software and scan to computer software do not work with new MacOS. Works fine with El Capitan.

Two solutions to try
1. Open your browser, type in the units IP nr like 192.168.1.111. Now your units webinterface opens and you can find a menue to do scans. This is totaly free.
2. VueScan will find your scanner. If you will spend some money. Go to www.hamrick.com and download the scanner software VueScan. They offer a free testversion that puts a watermark on each scan. The software finds your scanner by it self in secunds. If you pay for the software you get codes to register your download and the watermar dissapeare.
The VueScan software is faster and better than the old one and it's working on every brand of scanner.
The problem is not an HP issue, it's Apple Sierra that is missing something.

same problem here. It actually says that the scan software can not be found if you go in to HP utility and click scan to computer. This is definitely an incompatible driver. I thought this is why OSes have developer betas, so this kind of thing doesnt happen when we upgrade. This is not by far the first issue with HP printers, and if I could afford to replace it, I would buy another brand for sure.
Shaneful!

Hey there,
I was getting a similar issue when I upgraded to sierra. Did the steps you describe and also with support for Apple and HP and neither could resolve the issue.
I am trying to scan wirelessly. So I decided to to try and connect it physcially via USB cable and resetting the print system. I then added the printer via the printer set up and was able to scan.
Then I unplugged the printer reset the system again and added the printer via wireless this time and it worked.
Hopefully this will help you and anyone else.
Thanks
Ed
