Hello joeb0
If you could elaborate a bit on your specific issue I can provide you with additional steps to try to resolve your specific issue. As far as I have dealt with on this thread is a PDF not being able to open when scanning to network folder. If I were to provide additional steps for this it would be to making sure the correct version of Adobe PDF reader is installed. As well as identifying if it is just PDF files or if images scanned to a network folder have the same issue. If it is just PDF files then I would start concentrating on the operating system and it's files to resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, issues such as this can have a variety of elements that have to be identified and a one post answer cannot suffice.
I hope to hear back from you. Thank you for bringing your issue to the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Before I waste my time trying any of the various solutions for the 0KB scanned file size issue, does anyone know if any of these solutions work specifically for the OfficeJet Pro 8500 A909g, scanning to a network folder on a Windows 8.1 device? I have no problems printing from this computer to the printer, it's solely a scanning issue. Also, the printer scans easily to network folders on computers with earlier versions of Windows. Thanks.

Hello ATBarry
To answer your question there are various solutions to the issue you are describing, because there are different things that could have caused the issue you are describing. Permissions on your computer and or router could cause this. Issues with the software installed and/or the configuration of that software can cause this as well.
The first thing I would recommend that you do is to ensure that this Windows update is fully installed along with the associated update 2884846. One of the things that the first Windows update resolves is "When you scan and send a document from a Multifunction Print (MFP) device by using the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol to a file share on a Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer, the scan file cannot be saved to the file share and you receive an error message indicating that send operation failed."
If this does not resolve your issue posting any error messages that you get would be beneficial to helping you resolve this issue. Thank you for posting your issue on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

I am having the exact same issue. Tried following the steps outlined above and the printer install wizard tells me that my device is not supported. I have tried re-installing the drivers and still not able to scan. This is a huge inconvenience as I used the scanning feature all the time!

I was just able to successfully scan to PDF, by using the HP Solution Center - Scan Picture. I set it to scan to PDF and it was able to scan and save the file wirelessly. So there is definitely a problem in the software, since it is clear that it is possible to create a PDF file wirelessly from the scanner. I guess cannot scan to network folder from the printer. Pain in the a***

From all I read here, it is clear that this outstanding printer has lived it's useful live. As soon as I installed it on a computer using the Windows 8.1 platform, I encountered nothng but trouble. After numerous uninstalls and re-installations I have finally arrived at the point that the printer will do most of it's jobs correctly. BUT, the Scan Digital Filing to a network folder routine refuses to produce PDF's, JPG's or .tiff's. The PDF files are reported "Acrobat could not open 'file name' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). To create an an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF." When attempting to use the Digital filing to a network folder in .jpg or .tiff format, the file is created but it has 0 bytes of data and no image is available. It is clear that the drivers for this printer when installed on an 8.1 platform are deficient. From everything I have been able to read and learn by phone, HP has no intention of solving the problem as they consider this printer too old for support. Many of the scanning functions work with other software like NEAT, PaperPort and Adobe Acrobat - it is just the Digital filing function on the printer that does not work. My recommendation is that you waste no more time trying to get this function to work.

I just purchased a Surface Pro 3, so running windows 8.1. It immediately recognized the printer, and I was able to print. Like others, I can no longer scan from the printer control panel. I setup a new network folder on my Surface, and it foudn it and scanned to it alright, but all files, PDF or JPEG, are 0kb.
I reinstalled the full printer software from the HP sight, selecting Windows 8.1 as the operating system. The printer driver is dated 2012???
At any right, when I scan using the HP Solution Center software, the scans are successful. Just not with the physical printer's control panel. IN the direct digital filing setup, I designated the path I wanted it to use for storing my scans (not in My Documents/My Scans) but it ignored that and put it in My Documents/My Scans.
I guess as long as i got a scan working, it'll be ok, but to have to do everything manually, and then drag my scans to my preferred location is a drag. I would like to understand why the printer is obviously able to do a scan, but not from the printer control panel. It used to be so quick - load a document, select scan to network folder, done. Now its load a document, load the software, go thru the scanning menus and then go get my scan out of the wrong folder.
Love HP products. Disappointed in lack of resolution or even an explanation as to why this function no longer works wtih windows 8.1. An expalnation would certainly help.

Thanks for your response. It appears you have come to the same conclusion as I. The digital filing to a network folder button/function on the printer panel does not work. You found a work-around by purchasing new software. I found a work-around by using the scan function in Adobe Acrobat X. It is not the best solution because Adobe insists on scanning the full bed (legal size) and I have to crop to 8.5 x 11.
As I said earlier, HP has let us down by not issuing drivers for this printer that work with Windows 8.1 There is no indication that they will ever do so. They have already advised me that they do not support his printer any longer.
You are correct that this is a great printer. HP management is the failure for not continuing to support the printer as operating systems change.

The software I loaded, just so you know, is the free software offered by HP. So I didn't have to buy anything. It also does not require cropping etc. If you scan a picture, you can adjust the borders to fit your image in the scan preview. It's pretty good software that I use for many things besides scanning. Hope this helps further. Here's the link to the software:
