It's logical to assume that HP is working on it (perhaps with Apple).
As for those with Color Laserjet M277dw printers, the scanning problem is fixed by installing the latest printer firmware version 20160606. This is the printer firmware, not the Mac-side drivers. I installed it directly from the printer by going to: Setup> Service > LaserJet Update.

Scanning from Preview application not working.
Scanning from Easy Scan 1.6 not working.
Scanning from the printer 'Scan' tab in Printers & Scanners preferences not working.
Basically, scanning does not work. The printer goes through the motion (scanning bar lights up and moves) but no scan appears.
Problem fixed by updating to firmware 20160606 via the printer control panel: Setup > Service > LaserJet Update on the control panel.

MFP M277dw MacOS Sierra
After upgrade my printer with the new firmware 20160606, can scan without problem. Easy scan is working .
This firmware upgrade for my printer (MFP M277dw) fixed the scan problem of Mac Os Sierra at least for me.
Thank you for the information.

I had the same problem with scanner ever since I started using 10.12. The printer also stopped responding after I upgraded to 10.12.1 beta 2. I followed apple support suggestions, reset the print system and removed fiiles from /Library/Printers. This didn't help either.
Finally, I noticed that the protocol used is Secure AirPrint by default while adding the printer from "Printers & Scanners". I changed that to "AirPrint" and added the printer. Both printer and scanner started working. I'm not sure if this will be helpful in all cases. Still worth a try.

Just spent over an hour on the phone to HP. They logged into my computer, changed the firmware, downloaded a ton of stuff twice and the printer is finally working. They did admit that their software hasn't been updated to take account of OS Sierra 10.12
