I am trying to scan a document with the HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One, using the feature Webscan in the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) to save scans to a Lenovo Chromebook C340-11. When I click Start Scan on a tab in the browser Chrome on the Chromebook, the 6958's touch screen displays the message "Scanning"; two new tabs (each untitled) come up in the browser Chrome on the Chromebook, one of which bears the message, "The device is busy. Try again later." When the 6958's touch screen stops indicating "Scanning" and reverts to its "home" screen, that tab in the browser changes to the message "Scan cancelled." The other new untitled tab in the browser displays the message "Scanning page" with an activity bar indicating that something is going on. But nothing is going on by this time--it remains in that state indefinitely. Back at the tab where I clicked Start Scan, there is a Status message saying, "Scan Cancelled". And that's it: the scan has failed.
I have set my browser Chrome on the Lenovo Chromebook so that Pop-ups are allowed.

Not sure -
From your Description I cannot tell whether you are using Webscan or a different scan button.
I think you are doing this correctly.
Disclaimer: I don't "speak" Chrome OS.
What to do?
You could try Restarting the printer to make sure it is connecting the the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
You could try a different Browser, I guess.
Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software
NOTE: Webscan feature is not available on Laser printers
If the printer is on the network,
If the EWS feature is available on your printer,
- Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
- Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > make sure Webscan is checked / enabled
- Click Apply to save any changes
Next
- Tab Scan > Webscan
- Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF
- Click Start Scan to scan your document / image using Webscan
- After the scan is complete, Save the scan to your computer.
What to check / do
Webscan must be enabled in EWS > Security > Administrator Settings > Click Apply to save any changes
Webscan is used from within EWS > Scan > Webscan
Examples
EWS_9025_Webscan_Settings_Security_Administrator_2
EWS_9025_Webscan_1
EWS_Webscan_1A
EWS_Webscan_1B
EWS_Webscan_1C

I appreciate your efforts to help me, including your disclaimer about not speaking ChromeOS. Let me speak to a few of the points that you raised in your response to my plea for help.
1. The button Start Scan that I referred to is indeed that of the feature Webscan of the 6958's Embedded Web Server as it presents itself in a tab of the browser Chrome. After typing in the printer's IP Address in Chrome's address box to produce the Embedded Web Server to the Chromebook's screen, it is this button that I click.
2. I have indeed enabled Webscan from EWS, by checking the checkbox in the table's row for Webscan, under Scan from a Computer or a Mobile Device, under Scan, under Administrator Settings, under Security, on the menu Settings of the Embedded Web Server, and then clicking the button Apply.
3. Your suggestion to try a different browser (that is, a browser other than Chrome) seems to have merit. I thought that I would try Firefox. On its site on the worldwide web, Mozilla asks, rhetorically, "Is it hard to install 'Firefox for Chromebook'?", and then acknowledges that it is not straightforward. Mozilla says that the more worthwhile way of proceeding entails installing Firefox as a Linux app on the Chromebook, which entails setting up "Linux (Beta)" on the Chromebook, checking the "Terminal", running a script--it's short, but full of Linux idioms--restart your Linux "container", enable "Flatpak", etc. Now, I don't know a lick of Linux. But I am not averse to learning a bit of Linux if doing so will allow me to scan wirelessly from the HP OfficeJet 6958 to my Chromebook. At present, however, I lack the time to follow the procedure set forth on Mozilla's site. I hope to give it a try before the new year.

You are welcome.
On occasion - though I've never followed through on the idea - I've considered getting a Chromebook so I could learn something of the vagaries of Chrome OS .
I hope "something" works out for you.
Stay Safe.

I was able, yesterday, to get Mozilla's browser Firefox installed on my Lenovo Chromebook C340-11; I followed the procedure adumbrated in Mozilla's article "Run Firefox on ChromeOS", which can be found by searching the Worldwide Web for that title. After installing Firefox, I was able to scan from the HP 6958 OfficeJet All-in-One, using its Embedded Web Server, to my Lenovo C340-11 Chromebook, using the procedure that you set forth in your response to my plea for help. The last snare to attend to was to allow pop-ups with Firefox. In sum, your suggestion to try some browser other than Google's browser Chrome was helpful--thanks.

Excellent.
I have been using Firefox since the beginning of Firefox - Firefox is one of the two browsers I having running. The browser is configurable and accessible.
I am glad that Firefox has provided needed access to Webscan from your Chromebook.
Stay Safe!
