When I try to run "Network Folder Setup" from "HP Direct Digital Filing" I get the following messages:

The connection for this site is not secure
192.168.1.144 uses an unsupported protocol.
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

I have all three SMB 1.0 items selected (see below) as suggested in other posts but still get the same message.

Try the following below and see how it goes
Use the printer control panel to scan a document and save it to a folder on the network.
NOTE:
In order to use this feature, the printer must be connected to a network and the Scan to Network Folder feature must be configured by using the Scan to Network Folder Setup Wizard (Windows) or the HP Embedded Web Server. For instructions on configuring the feature, go to Set up Scan to Network Folder.
Load the document on the scanner glass according to the indicators on the printer.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Scan icon.
Touch the Scan to Network Folder item.
In the list of network folders, select the folder to which you want to save the document.
The control panel screen displays the scan settings.
If you want to change any of the settings, touch the Settings button, and then change the settings.
If the settings are correct, go to the next step.
Touch the Scan button to start the scan job.

Thank you for your response! Unfortunately you do seem to have missed the point!
I can scan documents to a memory device without any problems. This is a right PITA though when scanning a large number of documents which is a requirement of the parent project.
The problem described relates to scanning to a network folder rather than to a USB stick plugged into the printer and now seems to have taken on a life of its own! The delay in my response has been due to further investigations being carried out which have been partially successful insofar as I do now have a work round.
My current perception is that the "Scan to Network Folder" feature will only work with the host PC's internal drives, of which I have only one, the system drive (C:). Why this should be so is beyond me but I can set up a shared folder located on Drive C: which is internal, but not on Drive E: which is an external USB drive.
Whilst this does give me a work round it does create a slightly messy environment in that I now have data on my system drive which upsets my backup regime. I do see this as a bug in the software but do not plan to spend too much time on it as the work round will allow me to pursue the parent project.
As for closing the case, I think it should be closed as unsolved unless someone can come up with a way to use a shared external (USB) drive.
I can provide more details of my investigation if anyone does want to pursue the problem.
