I’ve noticed that the scanner bar light blinks constantly even when idle or sleep mode. 
what is the purpose and how can I fix this? Looks like the component would wear out quickly. 
this is a new printer and o a have yet to scan anything.

The blinking light on the scanner bar of your HP Smart Tank 6001 can indicate several things, but it's commonly a sign of activity or a potential issue. Here are a few reasons why the light might be blinking.

 

  • Initialization or Calibration: When first setting up the printer or after a restart, the scanner might be calibrating or performing self-checks. This is usually normal and should stop after a short period.
  • Firmware Update: The scanner might be undergoing a firmware update. This can sometimes cause the light to blink until the update is complete.
  • Error or Malfunction: Constant blinking could indicate an error or malfunction. This is less common but something to be aware of.
  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check for Updates: Ensure that the printer's firmware is up to date. You can do this through the HP Smart app or by visiting HP’s support website

Tried all of your suggestions and the light is still blinking. 
This appears to be a common issue that no one knows how to fix. Hopefully it just burns out in the warranty period.

I too am having the same issue on a copier I just installed yesterday.   It would seem with multiple new buyers having the same issues that there is more going on than some "update".  The flashing light is VERY annoying too....

Was told by HP that the printer is defective. Wanted me to return it to HP BEFORE they would send a new one. Only other suggestion was to return to Amazon where I bought it but they no longer carry it. 
I’ll use it til it breaks and turn off between uses so the light doesn’t drive me crazy at night. 
it will be the last HP printer I ever buy. Service is abysmal.

I bought mine at Best Buy and have their full GEEK Squad yearly  service.  So, at worst I will need to drive it to Best Buy for a swap out.  You would think that HP would be realizing this may be a serious issue with multiple reports in a 3 week period....

I took mine back to Best Buy and had them test two more and all three have the same defect.  I had to buy a different printer.
