Hi @MikeVCMS,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message "The scanner failed to complete the overview scan" could indicate several possible issues with your HP ENVY 5535 e-All-in-One Printer. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Restart Printer and Computer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Plug in the printer, turn it back on, and try scanning again.

Step 2: Check HP Software

  1. Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app or HP Full Feature Software installed:
    • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers/software for the HP ENVY 5535.
  2. Reinstall the software if it's already installed but possibly corrupted.

Step 3: Run HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to identify and fix scanning issues.

Step 4: Check Scanner Connection

  1. Ensure the printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi.
  2. Test the connection by printing a document.

Step 5: Perform a Hardware Reset

  1. With the printer powered on, unplug it from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer on.

Step 6: Test Scanning via Different Methods

  1. Open the Windows Fax and Scan application (or Preview if on macOS) and try scanning from there.
  2. If scanning works in another application, the issue may be specific to your scanning software.

Step 7: Check for Scan Settings

  1. Ensure the scanner is set to scan in PDF format:
    • Open the scanning software.
    • Select PDF as the file format.
    • Adjust other settings like resolution and color as needed.

Step 8: Check for Scanner Lock

Some scanners have a physical lock for transport purposes. Ensure this lock is disengaged.

Step 9: Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

If none of the above steps work, update your printer's firmware:

  1. Go to the HP Support website.
  2. Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
