Hi laughingface, sorry to hear that you are having issue when scanning. So I can better assist you, may I please have the model number of your printer as well as the operating system on your computer (Windows XP,Vista, 7, 8-8.1 or Mac).  Please write back at your convenience and I will be happy to help.

I had to go 'around Robin Hood's barn' (wherever that came from) and copy and drag the scan to my desktop then had to do an attachment to an email and send it that way.  Never got around to any other way of doing it.

I have this problem. My HP Photosmart C4280 All-in-one prints fine but when I go to scan it says USB is not connected. Seems to have happened with an OS upgrade a while back. I'm running OSX 10.11.5 I have updated the HP sw, rebooted computer and printer and still get this error. What next? You help would be much appreciated.
