Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

My HP printer was working fine - printer, scanner & copier. Today, when I tried to get into the HP Smart app in order to use the scanner, I got the following screen:

"Enable local network permission to use HP Smart with your printers

You must enable local network permission to find and set up a new printer or connect to a printer on your network.

If you do not want to grant this permission, set up using a computer instead by going to 123.hp.com

OPEN PERMISSION "

I have clicked on OPEN PERMISSION which took me to Privacy & Security/Location Services and then enabled HP Smart.

Nothing happened! I cannot get into the HP Smart app because the above screen pops up every time I try to open it and I cannot get any further.

I tried to set up the scanner using the screen on the printer but this just takes me to the HP folder and then the HP Smart app which I can't access because the above screen is blocking it.

Can anyone help?

Hi @Graham1391,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with this frustrating issue with the HP Smart app. Let's try to resolve it so you can use your scanner again.

To Address the Issue:

Confirm Local Network Permissions:

  • Go to your device’s SettingsPrivacy & SecurityLocal Network.
  • Ensure HP Smart is enabled for local network access (even if it appears enabled, toggle it off and back on to refresh the setting).

Restart the HP Smart App and Device:

  • Force close the HP Smart app.
  • Restart your device (smartphone or tablet).
  • Reopen the app to check if the issue is resolved.

Update the HP Smart App:

  • Check for updates in your device’s app store and install the latest version of HP Smart.

Reinstall the HP Smart App:

  • Uninstall the app completely, then reinstall it from your app store.
  • Set up the printer again using the app after reinstallation.

Alternative Scanning Method:

  • If the app still doesn't work, try scanning directly using the printer's control panel. Use the "Scan to Email" or "Scan to USB" feature if available.
  • Alternatively, connect your printer to your computer and use the built-in scanning software like Windows Fax and Scan (Windows) or Preview (macOS).

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

I realize that not all questions can be answered but could someone please try to answer my question. Very simply, the screen/message described above is blocking my access to the HP Smart app so I cannot scan at all. I tried deleting and re-downloading the app but that does not help. Any suggestions from anyone?

Hi Elohi_NR,

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, you have solved the problem. I realized when I read your reply carefully that when I was in Privacy & Security I was enabling HP Smart in Location Services and not in Local Network. I am now able to access the HP Smart app.

Thank you once again for your assistance.

Best regards

Graham 1391

PS  Before seeing your reply I also downloaded HP Easy Scan, which is also useful.

I have the same issue. I have given permissions in local network settings (not location services), force quit the app, restarted my mac. Same result. Deleted the app, reinstalled the app, same result. Always I am blocked from using the app by the window that says to enable local network permission. Very frustrating. HP needs to update its app to be compatible with the Sequoia operating system. I am moving on to a 3rd party app unless HP can offer a solution.

Hi KaryB,

Yes, this window first appeared after I had updated my Mac to the Sequoia operating system. However, the window disappeared after I gave permission in Privacy & Security-Local Network. Before I was able to fix the problem though HP suggested that I download HP Easy Scan from the App Store. This works fine just for scanning though it does not give you all the features of the HP Smart app.
