I just bought a M477fdw laser jet and have tried to set up scan to email and scan to network folder. I have been totally unsuccessful geting either of those two functions to work.
Here's what I have done to date:
I have used the procedures you outline, only for a mac instead of gmail.
i have correctly inputted SMTP server and the port (587)
I have checked SMTP server requires authentication
I have inputted SMTP User IDs and tried a) my email address; b) email user ID; c) smtp.mail.X.com (x is for the server)
I have correctly entered my SMTP PW
I have verified inputs with Apple to ensure I had right port number, SMTP address, etc. Got all clear from them
I have check auto cc
I have clicked on Save and test and repeatedly get this message: "The SMTP server requires authentication. Enter a valid username and password."
I think I have tried every permutation of names and ports and the results are the same.
THe printer is plugged into a wall socket
I uploaded the laters version of the Firmware (Mac) found here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m477-series/7326560. This firmware is installed in the laser jet
I have spoken to HP tech support and have spent hours on phone and chat with them. They have not/cannot provided a solution.
Does anyone out there know how to fix this? I have to believe this is working for some mac users out there.
Pls advise.

Hi,
If you are using an iCloud Mail acccount have two-factor authentication enabled you do not need to disable. You would need to create an app-specific password to use with the printer. You can follow this Apple support document for help.

Hi,
Is it an Apple Mail Account?
Please ensure Two-factor-Authentication is disabled foir your email settings, as well ensure that two-step verification is disabled too (those are 2 different security features from Apple), the printer will not be able to connect to an account with either two-factor authentication or two-step verification enabled:
https://support.apple.com/en-il/HT204915
If there is no change I suggest playing arount its security settings and see if there may be such advanced security features which prevent the printer from connecting..
Hope that may help,
Shlomi

FINALLY. I have wrestled with this for at least 10 days including with HP tech support (printers).
They have absolutely no idea about the procedure you offered.
I'd highly recommend you pass this along to the so called support teams. It would save a lot of headaches.
Thanks

Sorry, ShlomiL, bu this did not work for me.
The solution offered by Stretch Music (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/replypage/board-id/Install/message-id/344046) did the trick.
Thanks, anyways, for taking the time to respond

Scan Error. Was working fine for months then suddenly: Username or password is incorrect. Ensure both user account and password are valid. What in the world is the fix for this??? Going in circles on different threads with "solved" or "accepted solution" but none have worked for me. The issue isn't getting it setup correctly as it was working fine. The question is why it no longer works so please do not give me the run around with the basic install instructions or a video tutorial on Windows from 6 years ago. What are the steps to fix this TODAY???????????!!!!!

This is the message I get when trying to scan documents on my HP476nw.
it has been working perfectly ok until recently and indeed all functions are still working other than scanning to email.
It may be coincidental but this happened shortly after I changed my Microsoft Outlook email password due to a security breach.
please can someone help me?
