All I want to do is scan now. What happened to the HP Smart app? It's disappeared from my Applications folder. The simple HP app does nothing for me. It doesn't let me scan.
The “virtual assistant” is useless.
Furthermore, when I open the HP app, it opens Safari. My browser is Opera, not Safari.
Thanks.

You’re right -the current HP app for macOS is quite limited compared to what many users expect or were used to. It is mostly intended as a connection/setup tool and redirects you to online resources, which is why it feels “barebones” and launches Safari (or the system default browser). Unfortunately, HP hasn’t built all the features (like printing and scanning) directly into that app.
With your indulgence, here are a few practical workarounds:
Use HP Easy Scan for Scanning
HP Easy Scan remains the most reliable HP tool for scanning on macOS. It gives you options for single or multi-page scans, saving to PDF/JPG, and some editing.
For Printing
Printing doesn’t require the HP app. macOS handles it directly:
Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners, add your ENVY Inspire 7955e (if it’s not already there).
Then print from any app (Preview, Word, Safari, etc.) using File → Print.
The HP app isn’t necessary for day-to-day printing.
Default Browser Issue
Even though Opera is set as your default, HP’s macOS app seems hard-coded to launch Safari for certain links. That behavior is from HP’s side, not macOS. Sadly, there’s no setting to change this within the HP app.
Alternative Approach
If you’d prefer to skip HP apps entirely:
Use Image Capture (built into macOS) for scanning.
Use macOS printing via System Settings → Printers & Scanners for printing.
This way you’re not dependent on HP’s software at all.
Based on multiple customer feedback, you are hardly alone in finding HP’s software ecosystem confusing. Many community members prefer relying on HP Easy Scan + macOS’s own built-in tools rather than the new HP app.

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
You’re correct -the Mac App Store lists “HP Easy Scan”, not HP Smart.
Here's how to get your scanning back up and running for your AIO printer:
Install HP Easy Scan
Open the Mac App Store and search for HP Easy Scan.
Install and launch the app -it’s designed specifically for HP multifunction scanners and supports multipage scanning, basic editing, and image formats. The current version supports macOS 13 and 14.
Reinstall or Use the HP App (formerly HP Smart)
If you prefer the all-in-one experience, download the HP app (rebranded from HP Smart). It offers scanning capabilities, printer setup, shortcuts, support, and more.
Safari vs Opera Issue
macOS opens Safari when launching links from an HP app because Safari is still set as your system default browser. To change this:
Go to System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default Web Browser and switch it to Opera.
Alternative: Use Apple’s Built-in Image Capture
Go to Applications → Utilities → Image Capture. It allows scanning from your HP printer without requiring additional HP software.
TL;DR
HP Easy Scan is HP’s standalone scanning app on macOS -best for simple scanning tasks.
HP app (formerly HP Smart) offers broader functionality including scanning plus setup and support.
Change default browser in macOS settings to stop Safari from opening.
Use Image Capture if you'd like to avoid HP software altogether.

Thanks. I'll try the Easy Scan app.
My default browser is Opera, period. It says so in Opera and it says so under Settings.
The HP app is a very barebones app. To me, I don't even see where it can print.
HP disappoints me. The website has gotten very complicated. In fact, everything HP is now very complicated.
