Since purchasing my HP ENVY printer in August, 2021, I have used the Printer Assistant to scan documents to my computer. In the past few days I attempted to set up the "Scan from Printer to Computer" capability. It gave me an error message that although the printer was connected to the computer, HP Smart did not have the correct software to scan my document. that's ok with me. But when I went back to scan from the Printer Assistant on my computer, it would not open and let me do so. What have I changed that I should change back so I can again scan documents to my computer?

Hi, I had this same problem but running Windows 10 and an HP Envy 5540 printer/scanner. Tried all the on-line help but the scanner just wouldn't work. The 'Scan a Document or Photo' button on the HP Printer Assistant didn't work and the printer would not scan from the menu on it's own interface.
Tried everything and all the HP doctor stuff. Took 4 hours yesterday and 4 hrs again today.
See the first post Scanning/Faxing and Copying section about Windows 11 problems. The guidance from HP was to pull the power cable with the printer still on. Then press and hold power button to fully clear any stored energy in the system.
Pulled the power cable, waited 2-3 mins, pressed Power button for a minute and plugged the printer direct to the wall outlet (it was in an extension). Reinstalled the basic driver software from Print/Scan Doctor and ... it works. Just printed and scanned ok.
Couldn't get Smart Scan app to work though. It installs but won't boot. The start screen comes on for a few seconds then just goes off again. So now have 'HP Envy 5540 series : HP Printer Assistant' working. Funny though, it was working a couple of weeks ago then just stopped.

This is the advice I mentioned from HP........
Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- Are you getting any error message or code while scanning?
- Are you able to scan from the printer scanner bed?
While you respond to that, let's try these steps:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
And, also Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor: Follow steps from the link: Click here

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This procedure corrected my problem. After unplugging and holding down the Power Button and plugging the computer back into the outlet, I tried the scan from the Printer's Assistant first and it worked. I did not have to un-install and re-install the Basic Driver.
