I'm encountering a problem copying/scanning using an MFP M477FNW color laser jet:
When using the flatbed, I get a vertical, 3/4" wide stripe about 1.5" from the right side of the scan/copy:
Scanned on flatbed (smiley was on the original)
When using the sheet feeder, I get the same stripe, but it is 1.5" from the left side of the scan/copy:
Scanned using sheet feeder (smiley was on the original)
If I send a print job to the printer there is no stripe, so the problem is within the scanning mechanism. All information I've found is for a problem with just the sheet feeder, not the flatbed as well.
It's looking to me like the printer needs a replacement scanner unit but I'm hoping to get some educated opinions before making a large purchase. Any input/advice would be welcome.

Repairatrooper - thanks so much for the advice; I hadn't considered doing those steps. Unfortunately, both actions (firmware update and factory reset) had no effect on the problem. They were well worth the few minutes to try though.
In the end, replacing the scanner fixed the issue.

I would suggest that you first try to perform a factory reset and then make sure you have the current firmware installed. If you still have that defect then likely you have a hardware issue with the scanner. On this model HP only offers an ISA (integrated scanning assembly) which is the scanner and ADF as a single service part.
