How do I set up the M477fdw fax to not interfere with voice calls? How many rings should I set fax vs. answering machine? Is there a distinctive ring functionality and how do I set this up?

If you set up the answer mode as TAM (Telephone Answering Machine) and set the answering machine to answer first, the fax will listen to the phone line and only answer when fax tones are detected, see If the phone line is shared with an answering machine below:

Hi,
for the fax to work with an answering machine, set the fax to answer 2 rings after the answring machine.
For distinctive ring, you would meed to check if your phone provided provide any such service, if so you will need to change the fax settings for the pattern assigned to your fax numbers (e.g double or triple rings), but it mist be configured for your phone line by your phone provider first.

Hi Shlomil,
The first time I went through the fax setup, I must have missed the answering machine question. When I review the setup using the desktop HP utility only the number of rings was able to be set. So I re-ran setup on machine directly and I found that the answering machine question was incorrect and have now corrected so machine is now in TAM mode.
