Hi @barbarit,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your scans using the HP Smart app on your Mac Mini with macOS (Sequoia OS) result in extra-large file sizes, it could be due to high resolution or incorrect scan settings. Here's how to reduce the scan size to a normal size:
Steps to Adjust Scan Size:
Check the Resolution:
- Open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
- Click on Scan.
- In the scan settings, locate the Resolution (DPI) option.
- Lower the DPI to a standard value like 150 DPI or 300 DPI for normal-sized scans. Higher DPI values (e.g., 600 DPI) produce larger files.
Change File Format:
- Use a more compressed format like JPEG instead of PDF or TIFF (if the scan doesn't require a multi-page format).
- For documents, consider scanning in Grayscale or Black and White to reduce file size.
Crop or Adjust the Scanning Area:
- Before scanning, adjust the preview or scan area to exclude unnecessary white spaces or extra regions.
Compress the Output File:
- After scanning, use built-in macOS tools to compress the file.
- Open the scan in Preview, go to File > Export, and select a reduced quality setting.
Verify Page Size:
- Ensure the selected paper size in the scan settings matches your document (e.g., A4, Letter).
- Incorrect sizes can lead to larger file dimensions.
Update the HP Smart App and Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure both the HP Smart app and your printer's firmware are updated to avoid bugs that might inflate scan sizes.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

none of the suggestions are working. Nor will my 8600 accept downloads of s/w or f/w. HP has quit supporting old printers. Very unfortunate and very disappointing. I will have to replace the HP printer and will go with another brand.
