There's a small handle on the top side of the document feeder, on the side where you feed in the paper. If you lift that handle, you can open the top part of the document feeder. Once opened, you should see a small green, some sort of lever. If you give that a little push (towards the outside of the printer) and hold it that way, you can easily pull back the document.

Hope this was of any help.

I have been trying for hours now to figure out where the ADF is on my HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus. It is telling me I have a papper jam in the feeder. Yesterday when I pulled it up I was able to pull the paper out and ripped a piece of papper off.

So, I have two delemas now one is I have no clue where the ADF is and how I got to it yesterday. and second I am looking for a small piece of paper. You have no idea how much I need help right now.

Hi  and welcome to the HP Forums.

I see you are running into paper jam issues.

I would recommend utilizing the steps in this document on a 'Paper Jam' Message Displays on the All-in-One.

I would also recommend this document on The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Does Not Pick Up Paper for more information on accessing the ADF.

Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

I've been using this great machine for three years and wrestling with it every time there is a jam in the doc feeder when scanning, trying to jam my big fist under the immovable document feeder, reaching with tweezers..... then one day i happened to raise the lid all the way, and walah!  There was the roller around which my jammed documents had been winding themselves every time.  All i had to do was roll the white wheel until i came the paper edge, pull gently, and out it came.

I'm posting this in hopes it will help me not to forget the solution when it happens again in 5 or 6 months

I AM VISUALLY IMPAIRED, HENCE THE ALL-CAPS TYPE. WHILE I HAVE KEPT MY ADF AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE, I HAVE NOW GOT A VERTICAL LINE RUNNING DOWN THE LENGTH OF EVERY PAGE THAT GOES THROUGH THE ADF, WHETHER GOING THROUGH THE SCANNER OR THE PRINTER DOES NOT MATTER. IT'S WHATEVER GOES THROUGH THE ADF. ANYTHING SCANNED/PRINTED ON THE FLATBED GLASS IS ALWAYS CLEAN. SO MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I TAKE APART THE ADF ROLLERS FROM THEIR HOUSING SO THAT I CAN THOROUGHLY INSPECT FOR DIRT AND CLEAN THE ROLLERS PROPERLY? I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE TO RELEASE THE ROLLERS AND CLEAN THEM OR THE HOUSING THEY SIT IN. I KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING LIKE A PIECE OF DIRT THAT GOT DOWN IN THERE TO CAUSE SUCH A BIG BLACK VERTICAL LINE, AND IT'S ONLY ABOUT AN INCH IN FROM THE LEFT EDGE OF THE PAPER...PLEASE ADVISE! I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING IN THESE FORUMS OR ANYWHERE ON YOUR WEBSITE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. IF YOU DO HAVE SOMETHING SOMEWHERE, YOUR SEARCH ENGINE IS NOT SENSITIVE ENOUGH TO SUGGEST IT!

I was able to remove the paper, however, now no matter where I return the green lever to I can no longer scan using the paper feed or just placing page on thescanner as the message comes back"error message" the scanner is busy.
