HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

HP Laserjet Pro MFP M28W will not scan.  Get message:  unable to communicate with scanner.  Scan doctor gets stuck in windows (wia) scan; detected a scan (wia) software problem, and it suggests each time to uninstall software, which i have now done several times but reinstalling software from the disc or with hp easy start does NOT solve this problem.  Also found the thread on 'services' and checked  WIA, RCP, Shell Hardware and all items are on automatic and running, so that does not seem to be the issue either. This printer-scanner is connected via usb to a PC with windows 7 (64 bit).  Only scanning is a problem, printer works.  How to resolve this issue?  It's been impossible to find a solution on HP or this forum and have been trying to resolve this issue for hours now.

Hi,
Try ensuring the WIA Service options and dependencies are correctly set as following:
Step 1: Check Windows Image Acquisition settings

    • Search Windows for services, then click the Services Control panel setting in the list of results.
      The Services window opens.
    • Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in the Name column and look at the Status and Startup type values.
    • If the status is 'Started' and the Startup type is 'Automatic', WIA is running correctly. Skip to the next step.
    • If the status is 'Disabled', right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), click Properties, click the General tab, click Start under the Service status, then select Automatic from the Startup type drop-down menu.

If you cannot start WIA, make sure the following services are also Started and set as the Automatic startup type.
      • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
      • Shell Hardware Detection
      • RPC Endpoint Mapper
      • DCOM Server Process Launcher
Step 2: Set Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) dependencies
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Search Windows for CMD.
    3. Right-click Command Prompt from the list of search results, and then select Run as Administrator.
    4. In the Command Prompt window, enter Net stop stisvc, and then press Enter.
A Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was stopped successfully message displays.
    5.
In the Command Prompt window, enter Sc config stisvc depend= rpcss/ShellHWDetection and then press Enter.
A [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS message displays.
    6. In the Command Prompt window, enter Net start stisvc, and then press Enter
A Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was started successfully, message displays.
Example of a successful reset of WIA dependencies

Image: Example of a successful reset of WIA dependencies
Now try scanning and check for any difference.

Just tried all of the above. Unfortunately doesn't work, i now get a different message: scanner failed to complete the scan... (see pic)  instead of the previous message: unable to communicate with scanner. When i try the print & scan doctor it gets stuck again at windows WIA scan. All the services are enabled and on automatic as you described.  Only the RCP locator is in manual mode (see pic) but then this should have no effect?  Did succesfully reset Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service in CMD.  But scanner still not functioning after all of this.  What to do next in order to fix this scanner problem?

Getting frustrated, scanner stil not working inspite of all the suggested and tried solutions by expert Shlomil.  Still get message unable to communicate with scanner, tried all of the above suggetions for WIA, tried different USB ports, have reinstalled software several times.  Recently upgraded to windows 10 but problem remains:  Keep getting message: Unable to communicate with scanner!

Anybody else able to provide a solution to this problem? PLEASE?
