Microsoft Windows 11

Hello. I currently own an HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M283cdw, and it scans the computer about 20-30 times a day.

Currently, the firmware on this computer is  2024-03-21.

I have powered off the printer, installed the printer, and still do not know what else to do.

Hi @incognitoga,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw is performing scans unexpectedly or without your input, it could be due to a configuration issue or a software glitch. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Firmware Update: Although your firmware version is relatively recent (2024-03-21), it's possible that HP has released another update to address issues like the one you're experiencing.
  • Check for Updates:
    1. Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
    2. Download and install any available firmware updates.

2. Check Scheduled Tasks

  • Printer Software Settings: Sometimes, the printer software or drivers might have a scheduled task for scanning. Check the HP software installed on your computer (such as HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor) for any scheduled scans or automated tasks.
  • Disable Scheduled Scans: If you find any scheduled tasks for scanning, disable them.

3. Check Scan Settings

  • Automatic Scanning Options: Open the HP software on your computer and navigate to the scan settings. Look for any options related to automatic scanning or monitoring and disable them.
  • Default Scan Destinations: Ensure that no scan-to-computer or similar feature is inadvertently set up to trigger scanning frequently.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Factory Reset: If the issue persists, you may want to reset the printer to its factory settings. This can resolve many issues caused by misconfigurations or software glitches.
    1. On the printer's control panel, go to Setup or Settings.
    2. Find the Restore Defaults option (usually under System or Service) and select it.
    3. Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to reboot.

5. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Remove and Reinstall Printer Drivers: There could be a conflict with the printer drivers. Try removing the printer drivers from your computer and then reinstalling them.
    1. Go to Devices and Printers (Windows) or Printers & Scanners (macOS).
    2. Right-click on your printer and choose Remove device.
    3. Reinstall the printer using the latest drivers from the HP website.

6. Check for Network Issues

  • Network Troubleshooting: If the printer is connected to a network, ensure that no other devices on the network are inadvertently sending scan commands to the printer.
  • Disconnect Unnecessary Devices: Temporarily disconnect other devices from the network to see if the problem persists.

Following these steps should help you identify and resolve the issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw scanning unexpectedly.

If the issue continues despite trying the above steps, it may be necessary to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
