I have the same problem. My printer is the 8600 all-in-one. I have two computers, an older iMac and a Macbook Pro laptop. On the front panel of the printer, the older iMac is shown to be able to scan to, but the laptop is not. Everything else on the laptop with regard to the printer works fine. My printer is wireless. I can scan from my laptop, but I can't get the front panel of the printer to recognize the laptop. I get a message that says communication failed, and yet, it seems to be connected properly.
Still having the same problem after spending hours trying to find out why the older computer is listed on the front panel of the printer, but the Macbook Pro is not recognized. There must be an answer to this somewhere.

Hi @nancybl,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you cannot get your HP Officejet 6500 e709n scanner to recognize your Mac computer. I am happy to look into this for you!
If your laptop is running Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan. (I am guessing.) There are no Full Feature Software and Drivers available from HP in order for this function to work. There is only the built-in driver directly from Apple available. So you will be able to print and scan from the laptop. But scan to computer will not work without the Full Feature Software and Drivers which is currently not available as previously stated. All we can do is wait and see if they become available in the future.

Hi,
First sorry for my bad english, I'am French ... nobody is perfect ...
On El Capitan, go to " system settings " ...
Go to security
unchek : My security settings are set for "Mac App Store and identified developers
And chek : security settings were set to "Anywhere"
Removed all the HP utilities and rebooted first. Then reinstalled using the HP Easy Start and making sure the security settings were set to "Anywhere"
And … it’s worked fine … you can scan from your Hp to your computer
