When copying a document or photo but not an id cd from the printers control panel, every thing comes out red. Sending from computer, smartphones, tablets, all is ok. Printer reports from control panel are in black! I have reset to factory standards to no avail. The problem started about 2 months ago and would happen from PC, smart phone, etc. Found out that I had to make sure the printer seleced was officjet pro 6970 PCL-3 (network). If I used officejet pro 6970 it would print red! (They are the same physical printer!)

Welcome to HP Community
Are you making photocopies from the Scanner Glass or the ADF?
I suggest you check the settings
-
Touch Copy, Copy Document, or Copy Photo on the printer control panel, and then select any available basic settings that apply to your copy job.
-
Touch Settings or the gear icon
.NOTE: You might need to scroll down the control panel screen to access all settings. Available settings vary by printer model.
-
Paper Type: Select the type of plain or photo paper you are making the copies on.
-
Quality: Select an available copy quality level.
-
Lighter/Darker or Contrast: If the original is faded or too saturated, make the copy lighter or darker.
-
Optimize or Enhancements: Select the type of item you are copying to improve quality, such as sharpening text and image edges or improving faded colors in photos.
-
HP Copy Fix: Automatic copy quality and skew adjustment tool.
-
Save Current Settings or Set as New Defaults: Retains the selected settings for future copy jobs.
-

I am doing the copy from the scanner glass. I have gone through the settings and none of the settings, including the advance pertain to my problem of no black ink when copying from the control panel. Interesting, I had not tried doing the copy through the ADF. I did and it printed BLACK!!! Redid the copy on the glass plate and it still came out red!!!

Please ensure the Scanner Glass is clean. If the issue persists then it could be an issue with the scanner bulb

Just to double check, I cleaned the glass and it did not make a difference. I might also add the when I used the ADF, it printed in black, so not sure how it could be the glass or bulb because the ADF copying also uses the glass and bulb. However, there is a difference in processing in the ADF mode. The scanner and bulb don't move when using ADF, but does when doing a copy from the glass. sounds like a different "applicatio/printer process/subroutine" is used for the ADF?
