hello I have solved the scanning problem it was none of the above. Turns out that this printer is not backwards compatabile with usb 3.0 ports. I purchased a usb 2.0 expansion card installed it in the computer and viola it works. I had to find someone with this printer on another computer to verify this first. My printer on a usb 2.0 on a different computer worked fine. Problem solved

Hi 2-tall

I understand you are getting a driver error when running the Print and Scan Doctor and can't scan.

The driver might have gotten corrupted. Could have been a update possibly.

I would uninstall the printer software and download and install the newest drivers.

Disconnect the USB cable first.

Then run the Print and Scan Doctor again.

Try to print and scan now.

Please let me know the results.

Hi, Thanks for the response but as I stated I have installed the latest software and drivers. The "scan to computer" function has never worked since I purchased the printer with the orignal or updated software. The print and scan doctor sees the printer but cannot communicate with it. Norton Internet Security does not see the printer on it's network map. Turning off Norton makes no difference. A quick goggle shows this to be a relatively common issue and I lean towards a hardware issue with the printer. Making me wonder if this is my last HP printer.

Hi 2-tall

If you run the Print and Scan Doctor and are still getting errors then the driver isn't installed properly.

Can you scan from the Print and Scan Doctor?

Can you scan from the software on the computer?

Let me know the results from the Print and Scan Doctor.

I would update the firmware on the printer.

Hi, Thanks again for the response. When I run the "Print & Scan Doctor" it searches for and finds the printer then it communicates with the printer and finds Officejet 6600 as the default printer. I select "Fix Scanning" and it again comes up with "Driver Error - Unable to communicate with printer". This is after updating the printer firmware from MIM2CN1204AR to MIM2CN1322DR. Driver version is 09.84.00.1189 and software version is 028.000.1315.000. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this software a half dozen times with no change. Still pulling my hair out.

Hi 2-tall

Sorry this is so frustrating for you.

Make sure the printer is plugged in directly to the computer in the back usb port for the desktop. (not through a USB hub)

Make sure the USB is no longer then 6 feet long.

Try another USB port on the computer.

Please, take a quick look at the "tip" of the USB cable that you're using. (I would like to know if it is the color blue). Also, take a look at the USB port physically on the computer and see what color that is.
You want to use the normal USB slot 2.0 not the latest USB 3.0. USB 3.0 are supposed to be backwards compatible.

Scanning requires bidirectional communication.
Check to make sure bidirectional support is enabled on the computer. Go to start, devices and printer, right click the printer, left click printer properties, click on the Ports tab, put check mark beside Enable bidirectional support.

Try and make a copy to see if the bulb is working properly. If not then that could be our problem.

Try another USB cable.

Make sure the ports are set to allow them through the Antivirus Software.
They are for printing and scanning.

Hi, Thanks for your efforts. In answer to your questions. No USB hub it's direct through a 4 ft grey shielded USB cable. Tip of cable at computer end is white. USB ports on computer are blue. I believe they are all USB 3.0. Already tried different USB port to no change. And yes USB 3.0 is backwards compatible. Bidirectional support is enabled. Scanner does work I can scan and make copies on the printer as well as scan and send a fax it just won't scan to computer. The printer sees the desktop but when I select scan to computer and it tries to access the desktop the printer says desktop is not available. Don't have another cable to try right now this one came off the old HP printer I believe. N.I.S. 2013 doesn't make it easy to open specific ports. It should see the wired printer in it's network map and I would just set it "full trust" unblocking required ports. Network map doesn't see the printer to set trust level (communications issue?). I have turned N.I.S. off to no change.Printer didn't come with a cable is there a certain part # I need if not I'm back to a hardware issue.

Hi 2-tall

I have included a document to try by going to Solution three: Check connectivity, Step three and down through the document. Try another USB cable, remove unnecessary files and folders with Disk Cleanup, turn off any start up programs, also turn off Antivirus software.

Is the USB cable 2.0 or 3.0?

Do you have another computer that you test the scanning to computer?

I am new at this, but I hope it's ok if I add that I have the same problem, but was scanning fine a few days ago. I have HP 6500 officejet all in one E709n, wireless. I have uninstalled full driver and re-downloaded and re-installed 5 times. Run Scan doctor 6 times. Still says, "Scanner software not communicating with device..... Pulling my hair out. Also did system restore to a date prior to problem and that did not fix.  Any help really appreciated!  Thank you.
