HP Officejet 4630
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hey Everyone.   Can anyone help?  Thanks!

I bought a brand new HP Officejet 4630 Printer, Scanner, Fax, Photocopier, Wireless Printer, Breadmaker, Surfboard Waxer, Mustache Trimmer, WIndow Washer, etc.

I've been able to print with it when it's connected via the USB cable.
I have not been able to print with it wirelessly via the "not via the internet" function.
I have not tried to print with it wirelessly via a router or the web (via HP ePrint).

I am trying to scan but cannot.

I get this message from the screen on the printer:  "No Computer Found".  Make sure the printer software is installed on your computer, and that "Scan to Computer" is enabled.

1.  Where does one go to enable "Scan to Computer"?
2.  I am pretty sure the printer software is installed.  I just now installed via the internet and then in an attempt to troubleshoot (when THAT didn't solve the problem!) via the disc.  No luck.  Zilcho.
3.  I have now attached not only the USB cable but also the phone looking cable.  No luck/no change.
4.  I have run the troubleshooter over & over again repeatedly.   I do this by going to my desktop and clicking the HP Officejet icon.  The screen that pops up is:  "PH Officejet 4630 Series : HP Printer Assistant".  Across the top it reads:  HP Connected.  Print, Scan, & Fax.  Shop.  Help.  Utilities.  Estimated Ink Levels.   I choose:  Print, Scan & Fax.  Then I choose:  Scan.  Then "Scan a Document or Photo".  I get:  "The HP Officejet 4630 series was not found."  I click "Okay."  Which by the way, should be changed to "Okaaaay.".
5.  I go to:  Utilities.  I click:  "HP Print and Scan Doctor".  Then OK.  Then wait.   "Searching for products.".  The following products are visible from your computer:   HP Officejet 4630 series.  USB.  Installed.       and    HPePrint  Network  Installed.  I choose the first one, HP Officejet 4630 series.
6.  "Communicating with your selected product."  "Your current default printer is "HP Officejet 4630 series." Select an action:   Fix Printing.  Fix Scanning.   I choose:  Fix Scanning.
7.  Recommended updates.  Green!   Device Manger:  Green!  Drive check:  Red and an X.   The Scan driver is unable to communicate with the product.  Save your work, close all applications....restart.  I have done this twice.  No luck.
8.  Device Status:  Green!
9.  WIndows (WIA) Scan.  Green!
10.  HP Twain Scan:  Yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it.  : O    HP Twain Scan Error:  Please save your work, close all applications, .... restart computer.... run the utility again.  Like I said, I restarted twice.
11.  Skip.
12.  Registry.  Good!  Green!
13.  HP Scan:  Green!  Check!
14.  Test scan:  Nothing.
Exit without taking survey.

Anyone have any clue?  I just bought an expensive doorstop.   Could it be not working because I am running Windows 8.1?

Thanks for your input.  Oh, I need answers, not more questions, got it?  Answering an answer with questions doesn't help at all.  I need answers.  Thx.

Hi @AdamLosAngeles

I would be happy to help you with your, does everything but scan, Officejet 4630!!

The detail you have included in your post is exactly what I like to see, this helps me to better understand the issue, thank you. So, it seems to me the root cause of the issue is related to the driver and how it is installing. I have an action plan that I will lay out for you that I'd like you to follow, the plan is to completely remove the software and driver, and reinstall.

  1. Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type %temp%
  2. Delete all files and folders from the temp folder. Choose skip if any pop ups appear saying any of the files could not be deleted
  3. Uninstall the software again - Uninstalling the Printer Software Instructions
  4. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
  5. Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.

    • Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
    • In the Open box, type msiexec /unregister, and then click OK.
    • Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
    • In the Open box, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK
*Note: there is a space between the c and the /

If you have any difficulty with this step, please use this link to perform it another way. Restarting Windows Installer
  6. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tool < How to Delete files using Disk Cleanup
  7. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
  8. Restart the computer
  9. Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box

    • Type services.msc and press Enter
    • Locate Print Spooler and double click on it to open the Spooler properites print spooler.JPG
    • Make sure startup type is set to Automatic, if it is not please click on the drop down and choose Automaticprinter server properties.JPG
    • Under Service status, please Stop the server, and then wait a moment and click Start

Deleting the printer from Printer Server Properties

    1. Open the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder

    2. Choose ‘Print server properties’.

    •  Win XP – With no printer selected, click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
    • Windows Vista – With no printer selected, press ‘Alt’ then click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
    • Windows 7/8 and 8.1 – Select any printer in the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder and click ‘Print Server properties’ above.

     3. Click on the ‘Drivers’ tab at the top of ‘Print server properties’ window

    4. Choose the printer you want to uninstall and click ‘Remove’

    5. Choose 'Remove driver only'

    6. The next screen will give a warning, letting you know that deleting the driver package will remove it from the system. Click ‘Yes’ to say that you are sure you want to do this.

  10. Download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows

The HP Printer Install Wizard for Window was created to help Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 users download and install the latest and most appropriate HP software solution for their HP Printer.

If you get stuck at any point, please stop and let me know. Skipping a step and proceeding to the next may not accomplish the intended result, and may only waste your time. If everything goes smoothly, you complete all of the suggested steps, and the issue remains, let me know and we I will get back to you with a new  strategy.

Thanks. I look forward to hearing back from you!

Hey!

1)  When ppl buy a new Honda or Toyota, we don't have to fix the car OURSELVES.
When we buy a brand new washing machine, do we immediately have to fix a problem OURSELVES with it right out of the box?  No.   When a patient comes into the hospital in which I work, if a piece of equipment doesn't work, do I say "Thank you Ma'am.  Here are the step by step procedures to fix the IV pump and the step by step procedures to fix the EKG machine driver?  NO.  So why on God's green Earth, am I being expected to fix something that is BRAND new?

2)  What is supposed to happen after this step:  "• In the Open box, type msiexec /unregister, and then click OK."  When I do that, nothing at all happens.

3)  What is supposed to happen after this step:  "• In the Open box, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK
*Note: there is a space between the c and the / "   When I do that, nothing at all happens.

4)  The following didn't help at all either: "If you have any difficulty with this step, please use this link to perform it another way. Restarting Windows Installer."  It sent me to a link to another person (that's okay), but the directions were not the same/compatible with my computer.  I even tried searching my computer for "services.msc"  and "LocateWindows Installer".  Nothing.

5)  You now owe me 2.5 hours of my time at a biling rate of $90/hour billed on the quarter hour.

What do you want to do now?

(Correction: I forgot to mention below that I downgraded my PC from Windows 10 64-bit PC to Windows 7 64-bit.

Deskjet 6980 driver worked there. I will test upgraded Windows 10 64-bit PC environment in a day or two.)

Hi, I have been in the same boat for the last two weeks.

My ordeal:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/Can-anyone-print-reliaby-with-Officeje...

But someone suggested trying Deskjet 6980 in a different thread, and I tried.

Voila!

At least the printing part seems to be fixed.

I can print wirelessly reliably for now.

See the relevant post in

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/4630-e-All-In-One-Printer-problem/td-p...

What you do is add a local printer using TCP port of a FIXED ip address which you assign to the

4630 printer, and using Windows Update to choose HP Deskjet 6980.

Imagine my pleasant surprise, after the driver installation I could print the test page for the first time from the problematic PC two weeks after the initial delivery: I could print from another PC (Win10 64-bit)  for no apparent reason. But that printer is not my main PC and so was a big problem for me.

In my case, using web interface of 4630, I could scan alright although not tested extensively.

As for FAX, due to printing issue, I have not bothered to test it yet 😞

I would be curious to learn if this solves the "printing" issue for you.

HP driver team ought to face up to the fact there *ARE* PCs where the 4630 driver SUITE does not seem to

work well. That Deskjet 6980 driver suite works on such a PC (at least a few of us including someone who posted the first post that mentions Deskjet 6980 driver) is a good guide to find out what are causing the

issues IMHO. Diagnosing and fixing software problems that are found only on a small number of PCs is difficult. I know.  But there *ARE* legitimate reasons for software that does not work well. After all this is digital topic.

It is not like the PC doesn't like 4630 🙂

I have been in software industry myself for a long time (and liked HP machines and printers).

I think we now have enough clues to home in against the real culprit.

Hope this helps.

After installing Deskjet 6980 driver under the dowgraded Windows 7 (64-bit) and saw that it made printing on 4930 wirelessly possible, I upgraded the PC to Windows 10.

The Deskjet 6980 driver still works under Windows 10:  I can print from the problematic PC.

BTW, I can scan using the original 4630 driver (a different printer icon appers in devices and printers window and so I can choose 4630 icon for scanning.)

I have not tested FAX yet, but my main purpose of using the 4630 unit for printing and scanning is now satisified.

But I *DO* wish there is a working robust driver for 4630.

BTW, I have no idea what is going on but I needed to restart Windows Imaging service before I can scan, until I did that

I got "WIP driver missing" message.

Seeing this, I wish  the 4630 driver installer restart Windows Imaging service at the end of the installation automagically (!)

Hope this helps other users stuck with non-printing 4630 under Windows 10.

Ms Sunshyn,  I used your protocol on an identical problem, though by USB and Win7-32.   A small portion of it was uncooperative: I couldn't remove the device driver because it said it was running, so I just uninstalled it.  Also, there was a couple items that needed admin credentials, which I probably have somewhere, but I just skipped it.  The scan problem disappeared.

There were two things that I'm curious about, one is how these problems occur, especially on a new device where it receives print data from a computer, but turns around and says there is no computer to send the scan to.

The other is that I hope I didn't delete anything in the temp delete that I shouldn't have.  I marked everything except the Setup Log Files.  It also did not delete the Debug Dump Files or System error memory dump files though marked.

Finally, I too appreciated Adam's detailed problem description and can sympathize with what a drag these setbacks are.  This has actually cost me several hours, that usurped other needed business.  It would have been worse if after all of the time it hadn't worked, because then I would not have known how much more effort would have been required  to either fix the problem, or perhaps settle for a downgraded device.  He took out his frustration out on you, and I'm sorry for that.  In my case I not only want to thank you for desiring to help, but that the stated problem was solved.

I have found that if I give up on the interventions and just waive the wifi capability & intead, plug it in, that solves the problem.

We're exactly where we were 30 yrs ago when the VHS player was invented and no one could turn off their blinking time light.  Just put some electrical tape over the flashing light as a work around.

THIS being said, probably the most important lesson is this:  Men, buy the women in your lives an Apple device but for you, HPs.  That way you have plausible deniability for when THEIR devices give them problems.  You do NOT want them getting upset, and they will, at YOU, when there are tech problems and you can't solve them.  "Sorry Dear, I don't know 'Apples', I have a machine.  Go to the Apple Store.  Here's the car keys."  WWIII completely averted. That's the best lesson to get out of this.  'Might save your marriage.

"Nice!" is all I can say about your instructions! They work! I got the scanning issue with my HP Officejet 4630 fixed by religiously following your instructions.

Issue: My printer used to work for print, copy, fax, and scan. However, recently the scanning function was broken. When I tried to scan a document, I got an error about No Computer Found.

I hesitated to use your advice for several days, due to the complex tasks involved. However, I finally decided to dedicate most of my two days on this.

To give you feedback, some steps can be skipped or modified to make the tasks less formidable. They are listed below:

1) Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.

When I typed msiexec /unregister and  msiexec /regserver and then entered Return key (no OK button), nothing happened. There was no confirmation. Is there a friendly user interface for these operations?

2) Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tool

After running Disk Cleanup, a dialog popped up with selected folders for the cleanup.  It was unclear if the selected folders were to be deleted or had already been deleted.

After I selected OK on the dialog, it went back to the Disk Cleanup progression bar. Then went back to the dialog of selected folders, back and forth. I didn't know when I should end it. Eventually I simply cancelled the progression bar since it didn't seem to move...

3) Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

I believe this is necessary since scanned documents will be saved in PDF files. However, with the installation of the latest Flash Player came unwanted applications including McAfee Security Scan (if I recall the name accurately) and True Key. It was a hassle, as after restarting my computer, McAfee showed on the screen claiming malicious attacks. It seemed like a virus.

I didn't believe that I had any attacks due to having Norton. I had to uninstall McAfee and True Key and restart my computer to complete the uninstall.

It would be helpful to provide a link to allow an installation of ONLY Adobe Flash Player without other garbage!

4)  Type services.msc and press Enter

  • Locate Print Spooler and double click on it to open the Spooler properites
  • Make sure startup type is set to Automatic, if it is not please click on the drop down and choose Automatic

There was a mistake here: You'll need to STOP the service in the Print Spooler properties before removing the driver in Print Server Properties in the next step.

To summarize, three key steps in resolving the scanning issue:

1) Remove the old driver and printer information completely from the computer:

Uninstall the HP printer driver software from Programs and Features

Deleting the printer from Printer Server Properties

2) Install Adobe Flash Player

3) Install the printer driver.

Thanks!

Emily

I had the same problem. There was a mistake in the instructions/steps.

You'll need to STOP the service in the Print Spooler properties before removing the driver in Print Server Properties.

I was at such a loss and avoided this because of the steps involved and thought there had to be a quicker way - but I'm so glad I followed these steps.

Only issue I had on Windows 10 doing this was this part

"Deleting the printer from Printer Server Properties

Click ‘Yes’ to say that you are sure you want to do this."

But I found a solution by looking on another website at how to do this on Windows 10.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
