The HP instruction booklet was very brief and really was basic set-up... the HP website was not user-friendly to easily navigate through - also the chat lady was not available yesterday (Sunday). Even called Staples and they didn't give me a lot of help over the phone. I really thought I had a general question...
Anyone know why this is happening?? It doesn't appear that the feeder is open or anything. Maybe there is something that got stuck that I cannot see? How would I get this problem fixed? I haven't had the printer all that long and it's rather frustrating to not be able to use the document feeder to scan documents. It keeps going down in price at Staples like about $60 since I bought it.
Thanks anyone for your help!! 🙂

Hi @ValleyGal-19,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are getting a "scanner lid or document feeder open" error message, with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610. And, I am happy to help!
Please, try a hard reset, by going to this post, How to perform a Hard Reset, by @Rich1. It is important that the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet, and not a surge protector. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
Then, I would double-check the firmware is up-to-date. Getting Printer Updates for HP Officejet Pro 8610, 8620, 8630, 8640, and 8660 e-All-in-One Printer S....
Afterwards, try the steps in this guide, An 'Out of Paper' Message Displays and the Printer Does Not Pick Up Paper for the HP Officejet Pro 8..., and pay close attention to Solution three: Clean the paper feed and pick rollers, Step 2: Clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad (optional).
If none of these steps resolve your issue, the printer will need to be serviced/or replaced. Please contact HP, phone support for further assistance. None of those possible fixes, fixed mine. Just all of the sudden I started geting the "scanner lid or document feeder open" error message"
All but took the thing apart, but all I hear is a clicking when I try to run documents through the scanner feed. And then the message.
Please does anyone have any other ideas? Hearing the clicking makes me think it is a GEAR issue, but I can't see anything chipped or broken. I think one or more might be bound up, but I can't find any that are not turning.
Any ideas would be appreciated. By the way is there a way to fax multiple documents by just using the scanner glass single scan method, without using the feeder?

I SOLVED (partially) my issue with the open lid error message. I have a Hp Deskjet Ink Advantage 3835 and i get this ADF error only when i try to scan (with HP SCAN) with the IMAGE settings at high DPI (600) and up, at 300 DPI and lower i get no error message. I noticed that when you scan at 600DPI the paper goes through slower, so maybe that`s got something to do with it. Hope this helps.
