So - to cut to the chase here:
(I) the apparently unuseable & unreadable ".HPIMAGE.VFS" file is sometimes created by HP printers when you put a memory stick in to scan files etc. to - it won't cause any harm, but it's useful to the printer, not you.
Delete it if you want - but the printer might recreate it next time you scan to the stick.
On some printers there are settings you can make to prevent it creating the file - but not all, it seems.
Again - it won't cause any harm - delete it if it makes you feel better.
(ii) The scans you're after are NOT in this file - they will (probably) be in a 'HPSCANS' folder (or possibly 'DCIM') that has been created on your stick - just search for it.
Alternatively, search for files with "scan" in the name, unless of course you changed the name of the file to be created when you scanned your document/photo etc. - in which can search for that filename.
I hope this summarises some of the previous posts.
