Hi @22848,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "could not connect scanner" indicates that there might be an issue with the connection between your computer and the scanner function of your HP DeskJet 5275 All-in-One printer. Here are several steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.
Check Physical Connections
- USB Connection: If you're using a USB connection, ensure that the cable is securely plugged into both the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB port on your computer.
- Wireless Connection: If you're using a wireless connection, make sure that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. You can check the printer's wireless settings to confirm this.
Restart Devices
- Restart Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart Computer: Restart your computer to reset any potential connection issues.
Update Printer Drivers
- HP Website: Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers and software for your HP DeskJet 5275.
- Automatic Updates: If you have HP Smart or HP Support Assistant installed, use these tools to check for and install any updates.
Check Scanner Software
- HP Scan Software: Make sure you have the HP Scan software installed. If not, you can download it from the HP website.
- Reinstall Software: If the software is already installed, try uninstalling and then reinstalling it to ensure it's not corrupted.
Check Scanner Status
- Windows Settings: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and ensure that your HP DeskJet 5275 is listed and set as the default printer. Click on it and select Manage to check the status of the scanner.
- HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app (if installed) to check the status and perform a scan to see if the app can connect to the scanner.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
HP provides a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor which can automatically diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. You can download it from the HP website and run it on your computer.
Firewall and Antivirus
- Disable Temporarily: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block the scanner. Temporarily disable these and try to connect the scanner again.
- Add Exception: Add the HP scanner software as an exception in your firewall or antivirus settings.
Check Scanner Settings
- Windows Scan App: Try using the built-in Windows Scan app to see if it can connect to the scanner.
- WIA and TWAIN Drivers: Ensure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and TWAIN drivers are correctly installed and running. These drivers are necessary for the scanner to function.
Network Issues
- Network Troubleshooter: Run the network troubleshooter on your computer to check for any network issues.
- Printer IP Address: Ensure that the printer's IP address hasn't changed. You can find this in the printer's network settings and update it in your computer's printer settings if needed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
