HP Stream 7-Windows 10 doesn't boot, I can't recovery 8.1 because can't boot from USB-HELP please!!

I purchased a used Stream 7 which had beed upgraded to Windows 10 and mistakenly used the reset option to attempt to fully clean it up. This rendered the tablet unbootable. I downloaded the image from this thread and tried, booted from EFI and attempted the reset option. This prompted me to reset Windows 10, and wouldn't proceed. Visiting other forums, it was suggested to use diskpart to remove all partitions from the disk and create a single ntfs partition. This too is failing. I am at a point where when I select 'Reset your PC', I get 'Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.'  Is my tablet recoverable? What do I need to create in terms of partitions to make the reset work?

Hi,I updated win 10 official version in my HP stream8.I using it as very smoothly.. There is storage is very less.thts y I reset the tab... Actually its my mistake .. I didn't read well the warning s before I done the reset... After finish reset it is asking about TPM .. but I cannot able to select s or no.. Then I go recovery mode...and I try to boot.... But its not succes... It say u r Computer couldn't start up... Wt to do now...pls help me. I already ask the same question.!

I solved my own problem that I posted earlier in the following way:

Downloaded a disk image of Windows 10 from Microsoft website using their builder here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I created a bootable USB stick.

Using an Micro USB OTG to USB adapter (http://amzn.to/1JGJI72) I got a full size USB port.

You need a keyboard to install as you won't have drivers for touch so I used a small USB hub and plugged the keyboard and USB drive into this and then booted from the USB drive. Hold down volume down whilst turning the tablet on.

I then did a clean install of Windows 10.

Next you need to install all of the drivers from the HP website (http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Stream-Tablets/7439994/model/7482041/drivers), make sure you still have your keyboard plugged in as it makes it easier.

Make sure you select Windows 10 as your OS.

The most important drivers are the Intel Chipset, Graphics, Camera and Audio Driver Pack. This is what turns your tablet back into a tablet.

Install all of the other drivers as well.

Then I was done, the only problem was that Windows was not activated so you need an Activation key. I've contacted Microsoft about this, you can still use Windows without it.

As I understand it, the factory install is compressed (WIMBOOT??) and uses much less disk space. If I do a straight Win10 install, how much disk will be left after the OS is installed?

This post has helped me greatly, as it has many others. I find W10 nowhere as fluid and efficient as W8.1, so going back caused my problems that required a reload of the OS.

The procedure detailed on page 1 works great - many thanks for the poster. "DigitalDAD", I suspect the problem you are experiencing is due to how you have set up your USB drive - you can't just format it, this throws up the problem you describe, it need to be made active and bootable. This link shows you how to do this correctly - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/jj200124.aspx . You can then run an OS off you USB drive.

Once you have your USB drive correctly formated and bootable, copy the contents of the of the zip file (NOT the zip file itself) into the root of the USB directory and follow the process on page 1. You will find that when you get to the 'bootmgr.efi' option, it will then recover the tablet OS correctly.

It is vital you follow the procedure EXACTLY, then you should be back in buisness.

Thanks for your respone. I tried making the partition FAT32/primary/active, following the link you sent - then copying the contents of the USB folder to the root of the USB drive. I can boot from EFI and get to Windows Recovery. When I select the 'Reset your PC' option however, it thinks for a bit - then errors with 'Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing'. The internal SSD is clean with no partitions defined.

Good news!  I tried another USB drive - exactly the same preparation/steps. This one worked! I guess I've seen similar behavior creating bootable USB sticks in the past - some seem to work and some don't. The first one (Verbatim) appeared to be working because Windows Recovery could still boot from the EFI file - just not perform the recovery. The second (Kingston) booted up and looks to be performing the recovery without problems. Will update once complete.

Update 1 - Got to 20% before battery died. All of my attempts over the last week seem to have taken their toll... Will start over once the battery is 100%

Great stuff - I'm pleased it has worked out for you. Funny how we take reliability for granted these days - we expect stuff like USB sticks to 'just work', as Job's used to say.

I had problems with a Verbatim USB stick several years ago and have only used SanDisk or Lexar ever since and had zero problems.

I just would like to say, that I am ultra greatful for the execellent responses on this post. I got a used Stream 7 with windows 10 installed. The touch quit working on it due to some driver issue and this thread. I don't normally talk on fourms, but I was so happy, I registered to express my gratitude. Thanks!!
