HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Cannot access any menu item until I remove ink cartridges, then can't do factory reset until I reinstall ink cartridges. It's like the most recent firmware update bricked my printer which worked until a few weeks ago.

 

Error message: Printer Failure

There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP.

 

Given recent reports, I have to wonder if it's true HP disabled functions if non-HP cartridges used which were not a requirement when I bought the printer (or I wouldn't have done so).

 

I'd appreciate any guidance. Thank you!
