I am thinking about upgrading my old HP desktop, both the CPU and GPU. According to my motherboard (Kaili) the best CPU is i7-4790. And to that CPU I also want to upgrade my GPU, but I am not quite sure what is compatible with my computer and what to look for (connections, dimensions, etc.). Would my computer support switching to an AMD RX 5700 XT or even RX 6700 XT for instance, or the NVIDIA equivalents such as GTX 1080, 1660 Super or any other good GPUs?

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Your HP ENVY Phoenix 810-000eo (E8T59EA), according to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03954976, is fitted with the Kaili (MSI-7826) motherboard (SSID: 2AF3). This motherboard is 24-pin ATX-power enabled, which means that you can upgrade your power supply with any ATX power supply, as long as you watch the dimensions (LxHxW) for fit inside your chassis.
Btw, the best processor for your desktop -it is on HP's "approved" CPU list, and what I would recommend, would be the i7- 4770K.
As far as a graphics card is concerned, you have many options with your stock 600-watt power supply, see this link, for example: https://gamersdiscussionhub.com/best-gpu-for-i7-4770k/.
For example, I would recommend the GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1660 Super or Ti, or the RTX 2070 Super.
Just make sure that whatever graphics card you choose fits inside your case: the extended three-fan GPUs probably wouldn't fit. Also, that your power supply has the PCIe power cable(s) necessary to power the card you want.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,

@NonSequitur777 I did not specify the power of the power supply, because no indication, for the model indicated by the user
but here, you give another model...
For graphics cards, as I indicated, it will therefore be necessary to check according to the power supply already in place, and what the manufacturer of the graphics card will recommend

Ok thanks. About the GPU, how do I know how many watts my PSU has? I can't find it on HPs site: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-phoenix-810-000-desktop-pc-series/5395579/model/6449456...
I can see from an archived store page about my old 770 2GB card, that it has recommended 600W.
Also, about the connectors, do I only need to check if it has enough PCIe-pins? My current 770 has 2x8 pins so I'm guessing that will be no problem for a new GPU.

Indeed, you already have an indication in relation to the graphics card, but sometimes there is more
You can see directly on the power box, this must be written, for the power
for connectors check directly @HannesRL
for the graphics card, I often recommend the Asus site with filter options
just 600w
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/graphics-cards/all-series/filter?Spec=681
or 550w
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/graphics-cards/all-series/filter?Spec=682

Alright, thanks. Yeah, you're right, the 4770k is actually a tiny bit better than the 4790 it seems.
I guess I will have to open the computer and measure the necessary dimensions for the GPU and look at PCIe cables now.
12-20-2022 09:43 AM
as I tell other users, see if you really need to change to a processor, maybe a little more powerful
It's not always worth it when the computer is old
the graphics card can be reused in another computer, but obviously less for the processor

Yeah I've been thinking about if it's worth it, and 4770k or 4790 seems to be well-fitted for the most modern games, they are usually listed at the recommended CPUs or slightly above for the most demanding games, so I think it will be a good investment. I'm also looking at second-hand CPUs in Sweden, so it will only cost me around $70 from what I've seen.
