The fix is usually a very simple one...
When you get lines while using the Automatic Document Feeder, and not from the scanner glass it's because there are some pieces of paper/dirt/something lying in the tiny sliver of glass at the far end of the glass.
Raise the cover and you'll see this sliver of a window, right under the side where the paper feeds. This is where the scanner actually parks to "see" the paper as it rolls by.
Gently remove any pieces with a can of compressed air, or a fine brush. They usually line up right where the stripes are.
I've had this issue with my HP 8600 before, and found the answer here on the Forum! 🙂

Greetings @jonjason,
Thanks for accessing the HP Support Forums for extra support! I see that you are getting vertical lines when scanning from the ADF. I will do my best to assist you with this issue.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a powered hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
I believe the steps in this document should help resolve the issue for the vertical lines in the scans: Copy and Scan Quality Issues.
