My printer keeps dropping the wireless connection to my laptop. The screen on the printer seems to go into sleep mode and stay there (and there is no setting for 'never' go into energy saving mode), and then won't respond to touch. My laptop then cannot establish a connection, and I have to shut down the printer and turn it back on, which restores it.

Thanks for your interest in the HP Support Forums!

I see that your HP Photosmart 7510 e-All-in-One Printer will not wake up from sleep mode. I would be happy to assist you with this.

If the printer goes into a sleep mode and does not wake up when you tap the screen, there could a problem with the printer or the wireless configuration.

Anytime the printer is asleep it should wake up when you tap the display screen. If the printer doesn't do that we need to try a few things to see what could be causing the problem.
  • Make sure that the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (don't use a power bar or a surge protector). This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
  • Try a different power outlet/room.
If the issue persists, continue on.

Restore the network defaults.
1. From the Home screen, touch Setup.
2. Touch Wireless.
3. Scroll through the options, and then select Restore Network Defaults.
4. Touch Yes, Restore Network Factory Defaults.

Once the network has been reset, allow the printer to go to sleep.

  • Tap the display screen to wake the printer.
  • What were the results?
If the printer does not wake up, we will need to perform the Semi-Full Reset to restore the printer to factory defaults. I can send you that information in a private message. In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.

If the printer wakes up correctly, proceed to the next step.

We are going to test the printer's hardware.  We are going to temporarily, connect the printer to your computer wirelessly by bypassing the router.

To connect wirelessly to the printer without a router
1. From the Home screen on the printer display, go to the Wireless menu and select Wireless Direct, and then press OK.
2. In the Wireless Direct menu, select Wireless Direct, and then press OK.
3. Using the buttons to the right, select On without Security, and then press OK.
TIP: If you would like to use HP wireless direct with greater security and if the computer or mobile
device supports WPA2 encryption, select the option that will enable security. With security enabled,
only users with the password can connect wirelessly to the printer. Without enabling security, anyone
with a wireless device within the wireless range of the printer can connect to the printer.
4. Press the button next to Display Name to display the wireless direct name.
5. If you have enabled security, press the button next to Display Password to display the wireless direct password.
6. After connecting to wireless direct, you need to install the printer software if you use a desktop
computer or laptop. If you use a mobile device, you need to install a compatible app on your mobile
device. You can start to use the printer over wireless direct if you have already installed the printer over a network.

Print from a wireless-capable computer
1. Make sure you have turned on HP wireless direct on the printer. For more information, see Connect wirelessly to the printer without a router on page 87 for more information.
2. Turn on the computer's Wi-Fi connection. For more information, see the documentation provided with the computer.
NOTE: If your computer does not support Wi-Fi, you are not able to use HP wireless direct.
3. From the computer, connect to a new network. Use the process you normally use to connect to a new wireless network or hotspot. Choose the HP wireless direct name from the list of wireless networks shown such as HP-Print-**-Photosmart 7510 series (where ** are the unique characters to identify your printer).
If HP wireless direct is turned on with security, enter the password when prompted.
4. Proceed to step 5 if the printer has been installed and connected to the computer over a wireless network. If the printer has been installed and connected to your computer with a USB cable, follow the steps below to install the printer software using the HP wireless direct connection.
a. Depending on your operating system, do one of the following:
● Windows 8: On the Start screen, right-click an empty area on the screen, click All Apps on
the app bar, and then click Printer Setup & Software.
● Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP: From the computer desktop, click Start, select
All Programs, click HP, click HP Photosmart 7510 series, and then click Printer Setup & Software.
b. Select Connect New Printer.
c. When the Connection Options software screen appears, select Wireless. Select HP Photosmart 7510 series from the list of detected printers.
d. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Print your document.

Now, make sure that the auto power-off feature is still disabled.

To enable or disable Auto Power-Off
1. From the Home screen, touch Setup.
2. Touch Preferences.
3. Scroll through the options, and then touch Set Auto-off.
4. Touch On or Off.
5. Touch Yes to confirm your selection or No to keep your current setting.

Now, test printing and allow the printer to go to sleep.
  1. Tap the display screen to wake the printer.
  2. Allow the printer to sleep again.
  3. Now, test printing.
If the issue is resolved, there is a setting on the router that is causing a problem with the wireless radio on the printer.  I would update the router's firmware or restore the defaults on the router and reconfigure the wireless network again. Otherwise, contact your ISP or router manufacturer.

If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.

Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers.
What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.

Thanks very much for the information. I have hit the stage where I will need to do the Semi-Full Reset to restore the printer to factory default settings. You mentioned you could send me that information, but I can't locate the "envelope" beside my handle name in order to view it. Are you able to send it to me directly?
