Aha.. That makes sense - re: "fix 29332648 in Windows update KB2962407 addresses "Shortened battery life when an idle audio device is not turned off on a computer running Windows".

That explains why my earlier work-around temporary fix to the problem worked - which was to start Windows Media Player with a song early in the start-up boot process before Windows had a change to load all the operating software.

We'll see how the next few days go now that I've uninstalled KB2962407.

That said, you'd think that HP or Microsoft could email registered owners to alert them of a potential audio problem and how to get around it.

In a world filled with useless texts and tweets, couldn't someone occasionally throw in a useful one?

I have "System Restore"d to before the update. I will try this soln by installing updating, but deselecting that one. Will report back after I see the results, but I can definitely say that uninstalling the update definitely works (at least now for a half day that I have not had any problems)

YES finally removed and hid that update... everything is working fine so far... fingers crossed.

Thanks again vHawk1.

I've just done all of that.

I'll let you know if its still working at the end of the day but so far it seems fine.

After having updated the sound system my laptop did the same( hp 2000). I simply rolled back the driver right under where it says update driver. My sound is back and working well!

HP Recommended

Go into your sound system and rollback the update. I did and my sound is working fine now.

I did this and it doesn't work for long.

When you say "I did this and it doesn't work for long" what is the "this" you tried?

Did you uninstall the Windows update KB2962407 as instructed?

Is your Windows update settings set to automatically download and install updates?

If so, check your Windows update to make sure that KB2962407 has not automatically been reinstalled..

Make sure you follow the instructions to check for Windows updates updates and "hide" the KB2962407 update such that it doesn't download and reinstall.

Well, I followed the instructions given to me by vHawk1 and everything has been working fine. My laptop has gone to sleep several times through out the day and came back on and I haven't lost sound even once. This seems to have fixed the problem.

here are the instructions I was given by vHawk1 again,

SuperMario1 (a HP Techy guru) in another thread on the subject claims that the audio problem was caused by Windows update KB2962407 and states that uninstalling the update (which is easy to do) will solve the problem and should bring the audio back to pre-update.

I followed the steps below and my audio has been working perfectly since.

So here is what you need to do: (note that you need to do step 2 to ensure that the auto windows updater doesn't reinstall the KB2962407 update:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that the following troubleshooting is ONLY a workaround, for now.

Uninstalling the Windows Update, then hiding it, is the only method of eliminating the issue if it caused by this update. Here is the procedure for uninstalling the update:

Step1:

1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Programs and Features”.

2. Click on “View Installed Updates”. Look for the update with the ID number KB2962407.

3. Right-click on the update and select “Uninstall”. Restart the computer.

Step 2: Next, here is the procedure for hiding the update:

1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Windows Updates”.

2. Click on “Check for Updates”. When the process is completed, is should find important update(s) available. Clicking on the message will open a window where the important update(s) is.

3. Right-click on the KB2962407 update and select “Hide Update”. This will prevent the update from being installed next time Windows Updates are being installed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Luck....

Thanks again vHawk!

No I had tried rolling back the audio driver update but it only works briefly. I have uninstalled the conflicting Windows update and so far so good.
