Many thanks, your posts in various forums had been of a lot halp

Well I had passed through your explanation in another forum and it seems clearly that HP had a problem in this and maybe they had changed the price after combining the connector with the ribon

This price by HP is realy rip of, but, it seems that there are no other way although the price for the HDD kit and the cable would be about 113 which is even more than adding 1tb of HDD and kit and cable to the laptop

Many thanks again

Many thanks MarkH29

One last question, from your photos, it seems that memory chips are easy upgradable, lets say from 1*8GB to 2 * 8 GB = 16 GB, but what is confusing is that the manual mention the following

Memory

Two non-accessible/upgradable memory module slots

DDR3L-1600 dual channel support

Support for 16-GB of system RAM in the following configurations:

16384-MB total system memory (8192×2)

12288-MB total system memory (8192×1) + (4096×1)

8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2)

4096-MB total system memory (4096×1)

What does it mean by non-accessible/upgrade memory module slots

This is strange in those types; I thought all those laptops are easily user memory accessible/upgradable

Hello jamesgravley

I asked MarkH29 the same question here as you both had opened the back cover of this laptop

I'm not sure what the wording of "non-accessbile" is all about. There are two slots that are easily accessed as you can see from the pictures. I didn't need to mess with them myself because I ordered the machine preinstalled with 16gb of ram, which is the highest it can go.

Your descritpion of support

16384-MB equals 16gb

8192-MB equals 8gb

4096-MB equals 4gb

They're just providing the various combination of memory RAM chips you can use there. Essentially, you can install any combination of 4Gb and 8GB RAM chips. You can have one single 4GB stick on up to two 8GB sticks to max out at 16GB of RAM. You can have two 4GB sticks, or one 4gb and one 8gb. It doesn't matter. They just have to be DDR3L-1600 dual chanel support.

I know I had asked too many questions

You mention that you install the windows on the m2.sata bay SSD, or I assume that

How did you install windows on the m2.sata SSD, did you clone or migrate the original operating system from the old HDD, or did you install a fresh windows on the m2.sata SSD, did you download the windows from the Microsoft website and use the product key from the windows installed on the original HDD that come with the laptop and what about the drivers, did you download it from HP website and is it was enough and you didn’t got any problems with it and no missing drivers

Please help

I'm assuming your model will come with Windows 10 as mine did.

At first, I attempted to clone my HDD to the SSD using Easeus Todo backup. It cloned succesfully, but I was not able boot from it. I don't know what the issue is and it was giving me a headache, so I just did a clean install of Windows 10 onto the SSD. Your results may vary. The downside of that is that you don't have any of the HP help software (if that matters to you). I also lost the free McAfee security software that came with the machine. That didn't matter to me.

Anyway, I used the Media Creation tool that Microsoft has, and I made USB installation media with it. Windows 10 automatically activated, as there is no product key. Microsoft recognizes your motherboard configuration and it works out I guess.

There were no real issues with the drivers. Since this machine was built with Windows 10, I think it was pretty much automatic. I did go into the Device Manager just now, and i noticed there was one unknown device. I did a right-click and had Windows search for the missing driver.....and it was no problem at all.

exactly, my operating system is windows 10 Home and I am planning to do as you did, buy an m2.sata SSD maybe the Samsung Envo 850 and download the windows from Microsoft website and install

I do appreciate your help and wish you the best

Hey Jamesgravely,

I just wanted to confirm if you were able to use a PCIe M.2 ssd. The service manual for the Envy 17 clearly shows that only the M.2 Sata FF 2280 can be used.

Also the images uploaded (the 4th one) by Mark show that the M.2 he's using has 2 dips and not one. Making it a combo of a B (6 pins) and M(5 pins) connector. The PCIe M.2 you uploaded has just one dip.

If in fact you were able to use the PCIe version please let me know as I would want to take advantage of the faster r/w speeds for virtualization purposes.

Thanks guys, you all have really helped.
