I came across this thread as I am planning to do exactly the same thing with the same laptop (not purchased yet). Thank you both for good questions and answers.
A quick update of the thread with how you experienced doing the job and how you experienced the performance before and after would be much appreciated.

I have just tried to insall a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive in the space and it fits okay, But when i go to turn the laptop back on the power light just flashes once. I have tried resseing the BIOS after i have installed it but that hasnt dont anything. If you managed to sort it could you advice on how to get the laptop to boot with the M.2 Drive installed

You are not reading or not understanding. I clearly said it will accept SATA M.2 not PCIe/NVME. The Evo 960 unfortunately is a PCIe/NVME M.2 disk so it is not ever going to work if you have exactly the model discussed above.
Has two prongs and I showed one with three? I am not sure how it could be explained any more clearly.

Opss Sorry I ordered the wrong one.
I now have the correct one and have installed it okay and ran an HDD to SSD clone program on it to move the windows files across. However when I go into the Bios to change the boot options to boot from the SSD its not finding it.
Would i have to remove the HDD and format it from another computer and then reinstall it into the laptop or is there another way to change the boot order?

OMG! Someone else has Found this! it is an M.2 mSATA Drive Correct? I put and Can run the Crucial MX500 M.2 mSATA in there, but the system refuses to read it as that, i keep getting an SCSI device, or internal HARD DISK. ? I HAVE called HP 20 times in the last week about this, they refuse to tell me how to get appropriate drivers and get the system to read and run this drive correctly , Mine is a i5 7gen Intel Core, and it came with a 1 TB drive, as well. And since Crucial has no acknodglement of this slot as well, the refused the gaurntee install with everything, including services.

Hi,
re: m.2 slot in hp 15-bs158sa
It is a "B key" slot and acording to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2
it supports sata + "pcie 2x" + others but not pcie 4x.
so I would like a confirmation or a justified!!! infirmation why an pcie 2x like Kingston a1000 https://www.kingston.com/us/ssd/consumer/SA1000M8 works or not.

I don't know who you are but the problem is you are doing your research on Wikipedia and have learned just enough to be dangerous. All M.2 slots have 2 chambers and look like they are for a "B" keyed device, but some M.2 slots can support SATA B + M keyed disks only and either type fits in an M.2 slot. So it frequently happens that people buy a pciE/nvme disk and are shocked to see that it fits but it does not work, which is apparently what has happended to you. I see yours is an NVME disk that is B + M but it is not the physical layout of the disk that matters: either the slot is "wired" to run an NVME or it is not and on this model it is not.
I have confirmed and justified. You have to look at the HP Service Manual for the model you have and then you also have to have a little experience deciphering it and that is why we are here.

ok
here we go
pls reply to nr 8 first, the rest are somehow optional for this post
1. "the problem is you are doing your research on Wikipedia" - considering that the biggest online enciclopedia isn't reliable sometimes, i won't dispute your opinion
2. "dangerous"? really ? can u justify this?
3. "All M.2 slots have 2 chambers and look like they are for a "B" keyed device" NOOOOO some of them clearly look like they are for "M" keyed devices
4. "but some M.2 slots can support SATA B + M keyed disks only"!!! now u are contradicting yourself, because u said "ONLY" that means the slot shoud have 3 chambers (remember u said only b+m disks)
5. "apparently what has happended to you" NO it DIDN'T happened to me, I'm only reaserching now, wiki included 🙂
6. "I see yours is an NVME" if by yours u mean the one from my example/post then I forgive u :))
7. "it is not the physical layout of the disk that matters" WRONG , the physical layout is the first among the things that matter .if u don't belive me pls try to plug a 40pin PATA to an m.2 of your choise
8. "either the slot is "wired" to run an NVME or it is not and on this model it is not" I don't contradict you, but can u justify it or somehow at leas give more details.
9. when comes to service manuals I have succesfuly done things that they clearly say is not possible :like puting dual core and 3gb ram in hp compaq 6720s. pls read that manual and I'll gladly give u some teamviewer access coz i know it will be hard to belive for you . i'm not bluffing i can prove it
ps pls start with nr 8
many thanks

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. When you start cherry picking parts of quotes, half sentences it shows you are intellectually dangerous. See paragraph 4 of your post above. Slot has 2 chambers. B or B + M key (2 or 3 prongs) will fit. Only SATA (usually 3 prong) will work. Selective editing distorts the meaning and is dishonest. Basically you can only run an NVME in those HP laptops that have an M.2 slot and the Service Manual says an NVME will work and even then you can run into compatibility issues with specific NVME disks. Good luck to you.
