HP Spectre X360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have 2 external screens connected to my HP Spectre x360 (one directly via HDMI and other to usb-c port via HDMI->usb-c adapter).

I wanted to connect third external display also via HDMI->usb-c adapter, however when I do it I hear the sound that something is connected to usb-c port, but nothing displays on that screen.

Adapter and screen work fine cause when I discounnected one of the other displays it worked fine.

Now, here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Dual-or-even-Triple-monitor-su... someone recommended to use docking station (this one https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Charging-Specific-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort/dp/B0779K9DG2/ref=sr_1_4?k...) and said it should support 3 displays.

But then someone also recommended doing similar setup to mine but it doesn't work for me.

This raises a question does HP Spectre x360 actually support 3 external displays or just two?

I did some research and the only mention I found is here: https://www.cnet.com/reviews/hp-spectre-x360-13t-review/2/ and it'd suggest only 2 are supported? 😞

Any other way to connect 3? I really need it.

Best regards

@Kear1,

Thank you for the information.

I checked the specifications of your computer and see that only one of the USB Type C ports supports display so you can connect only 2 displays to the computer.

Please refer to the below service guide for your computer for more information.

Thank you very much for providing this information.
I checked the pdf you linked to and on the page 5 (13/89) there are listed 2 usb-c ports:

1) USB Type-C power connector and Thunderbolt
port with HP Sleep and Charge

2) USB Type-C SuperSpeed port with HP Sleep and
Charge

However both of them mention:

"Connects a display device that has a USB Type-C connector,
providing DisplayPort output."

Doesn't that mean that they should both support display or am I reading it wrong?

If I'm actually reading it wrong, would it be possible to support 3 external displays if I used a docking station and connected it via usb-c which does support display?

I'm thinking about one of these ones:

@Kear1,

Only the Thunderbolt port supports the display.

Yes, you can connect a docking system and connect 3 displays to the computer.

Hi,
I'm actually following up on this cause I've discovered that what has been said here about only thunderbolt port supporting display isn't true.
I thought about trying one more thing, namely connecting 3 monitors (1 via hdmi and two via usb-c ports through usb-c->hdmi converters) and then closing the lid of the laptop. After doing that surprisingly all 3 monitors worked! (but of course nothing was displaying on the laptop itself)

That makes me thing whether it means that this laptop can support maximum 3 displays?

If I buy some of the docking stations via usb-c mentioned before would i be able to connect 3 external displays PLUS have laptop's own display working as well (meaning 4 screens simultaneously)

Regards

Any update on this?
I found another thread about it where someone had the same problem (could only connect 2 external displays): https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Spectre-x360-Convertible-ch004na-m...

So looks like this laptop does not support 3 external displays simultaneously with the laptop's main display.
Just wondering if having usb-c docking station would change anything or it's a hard limit regardless of how I connect them?

@Kear1,

The docking station works independently and the laptop's settings should not affect the docking station. However, I recommend you walk in to a computer store test it and they purchase the docking station.

Cheers!
