Hi folks,

I am having trouble only when printing onto photo paper, where the top (upto 10 millimetres) of print is missing the page, with the same blank amount at the bottom.  Obviously printer is set to best quality and photo paper in  settings.

This seems to gradually be getting worse over time.

When I change back to plain old paper and print it's absolutely fine.

Alignment checked, twice recently, but it hasn't solved the problem.

Grateful for any ideas

Thank you

Mark

Hi @Mr_MJP,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating this feels, especially when you’re expecting a perfect photo print and the top and bottom edges look like they’ve been trimmed off. This issue is quite common with borderless photo printing and usually relates to paper size settings, borderless mode, or printer margins.

Here’s the approved troubleshooting path:

Step 1: Check Borderless Printing Settings

  1. In your print dialog:
    • Select Photo Paper as the media type.
    • Enable Borderless Printing (sometimes called “Edge-to-Edge”).
    • Ensure the correct paper size (e.g., 4x6, 5x7, A4 photo).
  2. If borderless is off, the printer will leave margins at the top and bottom.

Step 2: Update Printer Driver & HP Smart

Step 3: Check Print Quality Settings

  • In the HP app or Printer Properties:
    • Set Quality = Best.
    • Disable “Fit to Page” if using exact photo size.
    • Enable Borderless for photo paper.

Step 4: Clean & Align Printhead

  • From the printer control panel or HP app:
    • Run Clean Printhead.
    • Run Align Printer again.
    • This ensures ink coverage is uniform.

Step 5: Paper Handling

  • Use HP Advanced Photo Paper.
  • Load paper with glossy side down and adjust guides snugly.
  • Avoid curled or bent sheets.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
