Hi @xennon50,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand there may be a driver issue or print setting that is preventing color printing from your Windows 8.1 desktop.
Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Steps to Resolve Color Printing Issue:
Check Printer Settings:
- Go to Devices and Printers in the Control Panel.
- Right-click on the HP OfficeJet 3835 and choose Printing Preferences.
- Under the Paper/Quality tab, ensure that Color is selected instead of Black & White or Grayscale.
- Click Apply and OK to save the settings.
Update or Reinstall Printer Driver:
- Visit the HP support page and download the latest drivers for your printer that are compatible with Windows 8.1.
- Uninstall the current printer driver through Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart your computer and reinstall the updated driver.
Check Print Queue Settings:
- When printing a document, click on Print and in the print dialog, click Properties or Preferences.
- Ensure that the Color option is selected here as well.
Test with Another App:
- Try printing a color document from different software (like Word, Excel, or Adobe Reader) to see if the problem persists across all apps or just one.
Upgrade to Windows 10/11:
- Windows 10: Microsoft officially supports free upgrades from Windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10, but this promotion officially ended in 2016. However, many users have still successfully upgraded for free using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
- You can try upgrading by downloading the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and selecting Upgrade this PC.
- Windows 11: Unfortunately, Windows 11 requires more modern hardware, and it is unlikely that an older desktop running Windows 8.1 will meet the system requirements (e.g., TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and modern processor). However, you could check your device's compatibility using the PC Health Check Tool.
Refer to this document: HP OfficeJet 3835 All-in-One Printer User manual
Yes, This printer supports Windows 10 and 11 drivers Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet 3835 All-in-One Printer
I hope this helps.
