I have an HP officejet pro 6968. I just put new ink cartridges in they are HP ink cartridges the numbers on the new ones is the same as the old one but the printer is say they are older generation cartridges so my printer will not print. I also just did an update on my printer still wont work. I honestly have had these cartridges for a few years I really don't printer that much I just bought them when I had extra money. Are they to old? Or is there something wrong with my printer?

@Sawright, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you might be running into an issue where the printer doesn't recognize the new cartridges as being compatible, even though they're the correct model.

Reset the Printer

Try performing a hard reset on your printer:

Turn off the printer.

Unplug it from the power source for about 10-15 minutes.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

This can sometimes help the printer "reboot" and recalibrate itself with the new cartridges.

Reinstall the Cartridges

Try removing the cartridges, and then reinstall them carefully. Sometimes, just a simple reinstallation will help the printer recognize them correctly.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Also, i suggest you refer to this guide: HP ink cartridge issues including, incompatible, missing and not recognized errors | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
