I just spent over $100 on new ink cartridges. The printer didn't have any problems with them at first, but the print quality was awful with horizontal lines. I tried the cleaning process and that did not help. Then it gave me an error message about the black cartridge not being installed. It will not print any black at all. I have removed and reinstalled it several times with no results except frustration and anger on my part. It has done this before with different new cartridges, but usually resolves after a few reinstalls. This time I am at my limit with this thing. HP has ripped me off enough with this cartridge scam. My question is which is a better alternative: Canon or Brother?
Thanks for any help. I haven't gotten any help from HP.

Hi @Dissatisfied9,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with new ink cartridges your HP Officejet Pro 6830 to encounter issues with recognizing and printing from them. Let's address the printer issue first to see if it can be resolved before moving on to alternatives.
Steps to Troubleshoot the HP Officejet Pro 6830 Cartridge Issue:
Ensure the Ink Cartridges are Genuine HP Products: Some HP printers are very particular about using genuine HP cartridges. Third-party or refilled cartridges may cause recognition or print quality problems.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn the printer on and unplug it from the power source while it is still on.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.
- Reinsert the cartridges once the printer is back on.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer.
- Gently remove the black cartridge and check for any dust or ink buildup on the contacts (metal connections on the cartridge and inside the printer).
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts.
- Let the contacts dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge.
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Outdated firmware can sometimes cause problems with cartridge recognition. Visit the HP support page for your model and search for firmware updates that might resolve the issue.
Printhead Cleaning:
- Since you’ve already run the cleaning process without improvement, try running the "Deep Clean" option if available in the printer software.
Align the Printhead:
- If print quality is the primary issue, aligning the printhead via the printer's control panel or software may help resolve horizontal lines.
Disable HP Cartridge Protection (if applicable):
- Some HP printers have a feature that locks cartridges to a specific printer. Try disabling this feature through the printer’s settings or using the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.
