Hi @Harry81,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand how frustrating it is to see vertical lines on printed photos from your HP ENVY 4524 All-in-One Printer, especially after you've already run alignment, head cleaning, and other maintenance steps. You're doing everything right, and we’re here to help you move forward.
Steps to Fix Vertical Lines
1. Use HP Print Quality Diagnostic Tools
- Open the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant
- Go to Tools > Print Quality Toolbox
- Run:
- Clean Printhead
- Align Printhead
- Print Diagnostic Page
2. Inspect and Clean Cartridges Manually
- Open the cartridge access door
- Remove cartridges and gently clean the copper-colored contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water
- Let them dry for 10 minutes before reinserting
3. Use Genuine HP Ink
- Non-HP or refilled cartridges can cause inconsistent ink flow
- Check cartridge status in the HP Smart app or printer control panel
4. Print on HP Photo Paper
- Use HP Advanced Photo Paper for the best results
- Ensure paper is loaded correctly and not curled or damp
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit the HP ENVY 4524 All-in-One Printer | HP® Support
- Download and install the latest firmware for your printer
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your help, I followed all instructions, however i still had the vertical lines. As a last resort, I changed the tri-colour cartridge which got rid of the problem. The one I had in, was quite old as I don't do a lot of printing of photos now.
Thanks again for you assistance.
Harry.

Hi @Harry81,
Thank you so much for the update, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to let us know the outcome. We’re very glad to hear that replacing the tri-colour cartridge resolved the vertical line issue on your prints.
Older or partially dried ink cartridges can sometimes cause print quality problems such as streaks, faded areas, or lines, especially when the printer hasn’t been used frequently for photo printing. Replacing the cartridge, as you did, is exactly the right step in such cases.
We’re happy everything is now working properly again. Should you notice any future changes in print quality or need advice on keeping the printer in top condition, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll be glad to assist.
Take care and have an amazing day!
