So my HP 3830 printer stopped printing in color for my wife's Surface Pro 4 and she asked me to take a look. We use this printer as a wireless printer and she had lost the option to select color from the printer settings (it should be under the Paper/Quality tab in Printer Preferences) I was still able to print in color on our HP Pro 3500 Desktop while I was investigating but that changed as soon as I removed the printer and tried to add it back. Went to the same settings and the option was gone. Tried to print from my phone and I was able to print in color (by default and by selecting color). Then I tried to print from my Surface Pro 3 and the first print was in color, second was the test print that came out B&W, and now it only prints in B&W.
So, I added the printer a second time but used a printer cable on my wife's computer. Everything was back to normal color and the color option was also back in the settings under the Paper/Quality tab. So the short story is I can print in color on my phone and with a wired connection but not via wireless. Could really use some help on this.

The workaround could also work for your specific HP printer. If it is the case, thanks to give feedback.

1. Download the HP Print Doctor from the next link:
>> HP Print Doctor - HPPSdr.exe
2. Run and select the option for "Fix Printing"
3. Restart the computer and try again to print in Color.
