Following up on my previous post: I closed Chrome, set Safari to the default browser, and then launched HP Smart to scan. It worked. Afterward, I switched back to Crome.  I hope HP fixes this soon, since this will be a big inconvenience whenever I want to use my printer. Chrome is a widely used browser and HP Smart should work with it.

I had it the other way round. My default browser was Safari and I had to change it to Google Chrome. System Preferences > General > Select Chrome as default. It worked perfectly fine after that! I guess Safari was blocking the pop-up window for logging in to HP Smart.

I'm afraid that this is just completely broken on Monterrey. I have the latest version of HP Smart, there are no system updates pending, and no matter which browser I choose as my default (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, take your pick) no window opens for me to sign in. If I go to https://www.hpsmart.com/gb/en in the default browser and sign in, unlike other posters here, nothing happens for me. Also, HP Easy Scan doesn't seem to be an option for me, so I am currently locked out of the scan functionality of my printer because HP Smart DOES NOT WORK. Why should I have to sign in anyway, it 's not a necessary function, surely? Yes, the analytics might be useful to HP, but when you have issues like this, my product is effectively disabled.

VERY UNHAPPY. SORT IT OUT HP.

Not sure if this will help others but what I did and worked for me:

Go to the HP page in Safari and set the site settings to allow auto play and popup windows and disable content blockers. Then Quit Safari and go back to HP Settings app and try to log in.

Doing this does indeed open up an HP Smart log-in pop-up in the browser which is progress, I suppose.

The issue is that after trying to log in via the pop-up it (1) either tries to load the account interminably and gets stuck, or (2) after inputting the log-in information, it circles back to the log-in window again.

It seems that no matter what one does there is always another issue around the corner, which is horrendous, since this, as previously mentioned by another user, renders the scanner effectively unusable--and this is done by HP itself by requiring the user to log in to use it.

As for the fix that finally worked for me: I switched default browser from Chrome to Safari, quit Chrome, un-installed HP smart, re-installed HP smart through Safari, and now somehow I can scan again.  Thank you community for the help.

Same problem, but even larger side effects: After getting the 'FIND THE OPEN BROWSER WINDOW, THEN SIGN IN TO YOUR HP ACCOUNT. NOTE: THE WINDOW MIGHT BE BEHIND ANOTHER OPEN WINDOW OR MINIMISED' message, other applications will no longer usefully come to the forefront. If I click on any other windows, they come to the forefront for a split second, then move themselves to the background again (with Chrome taking the foreground, according to the menu bar). Closing Chrome completely solves it - until you launch Chrome again, in which case you can no longer bring other applications to the foreground again. The only solution is a full reboot.
