I have been trying to get this thing to work for nearly six hours now and my frustration level is about at maximum.  I have repeatedly tried to install software for this printer but the installation invariably fails.  I get a cryptic message about "error code 1603.  I wasted two hours with the "wizard" which seemed to be in an endless loop of trying to identify my printer.  It always found it but I still cannot use it to print anything.

I am using a fairly new Acer Aspire E5-15 laptop and am connected to my printer by wi-fi.  The printer's display shows it as being connected to my home network and even lists an IP address for the printer.

I have downloaded and installed a number of HP support assistant programs, none of which has helped in any way.

My operating system is Win 10 64-bit, and my system was "reset" yesterday and updated yesterday (5 hours ago).

It is very unhelpful that my printer takes itself offline every 15 to 20 minutes and I must press the power switch to get it to connect again.

@Dave_Hague, Thanks again for your response and time.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

It certainly looks to be a permission issue on your PC.

  • First, uninstall the printer drivers completely by going to – control panel – all programs.
  • Once the drivers are completely uninstalled, restart your computer.
  • Press “Windows logo key” + “R” to get the run pop-up window. Type “regedit” and press ok.
  • To back up the entire registry, click Computer. Click “File”, and then click “Export”. Type a name for the backup file and save the backup copy to the location of your choice.
  • Now, to give the ENUM permissions, expand the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” – “SYSTEM” – “CurrentControlSet”.
  • Right-click on “ENUM” and select “Permissions”. Now click on “Add”.
  • In the “Enter the object names to select” field type “ADMINISTRATOR” and press ok.
  • Administrator will be added on the “Group or username filed”. Now click “Advanced”. You will get the “Advanced Security Settings for Enum” window. Select the “Permissions” tab.
  • Select the Administrator field – Edit – And select the box next to “Full control”. Press ok. Repeat the exercise for all the type except for “Everyone”.
  • Now select the “Auditing” tab select “Add”. Again add “Administrator” field. Edit and give full permissions.
  • Apply the settings, and exit out of registry.
  • Now install the printer software drivers.

This time try installing windows built-in drivers and check if it helps.

Hi! @Dave_Hague, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues installing the printer software on your Windows 10 PC.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

As you mentioned you have issues printing from your printer after updating your PC to Windows 10.

Try the steps recommended below.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer & PC if present.
Go to control panel – Programs and features – Select all HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
Go to control panel – Devices and printers – Select each of the printer entries and then select remove printer / device.
Now press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
Again go to "run" window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
Now restart your computer.
Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.
Click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/dj3630/DJ3630__Full_WebPack_1107.exe to install the printer drivers.
Connect the USB cable if needed.

Also, if you have issues uninstall the printer software using Revo uninstaller.

You can download the software from Google and delete the HP Envy entries from your PC.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot print job stuck in the print queue issues.

If the issue still persists try the steps recommended below.

Remove the printer from Devices and Printers
Remove any icons for your printer from the Devices and Printers folder.
If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Turn the printer off and on again, and make sure that it is in a ready state.
Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
Right-click the printer icon () for your printer, and then click Remove Device. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
If multiple icons exist for the printer, remove them all.

Set Windows Update to automatically download driver software
Open Windows Device Installation Settings and confirm that your computer is set to automatically download driver software.
Search Windows for change device installation, and then click the Change device installation settings Control Panel setting in the list of results.
Device Installation Settings window displays.
Select the Yes option, and then click Save Changes.

Refer this article to know more information about driver installation issues.

I want to thank MrRobot for answering my question with a detailed procedure for installing my ENVY 5660 printer.  Unfortunately the printer STILL does not work with my computer.  That's right - after another all-night session, I still cannot print a bloody thing on my printer!

The procedure I was given required me to delete several bits of HP software which had cluttered up my hard drive during my previous attempts to install software for this printer.  I had no idea that Windows 10 had made the process of deleting an application so cumbersome and time consuming!

After hours of fooling with print server properties and "services" I was supposed to use a link in MrRobot's reply to download a piece of HP software called  _Full_WebPack_1107.  His link instead took me to a package called EN5660_Full_WebPack_40.11.1135.  I downloaded and then installed this, after which I wasted several more hours watching it try and fail to install on my computer.

NOTE:  I did NOT "Upgrade this computer to Win 10.  I bought it new last summer and Win 10 was already installed.  I have NEVER been able to get this damned printer to work with my computer.  Not even once!. My wife's laptop also has Win 10 and for some reason she has the ability to print and scan from her laptop.  The problems ONLY occur when I try to get it to work from MY laptop!  In the past three days I have wasted a total of probably 18 hours fooling with this thing.  In the 25 years during which I have worked with computers, I have NEVER encountered anything as frustrating as trying to make this HP printer work with my Win 10 laptop!

I am ready to sell the damned thing for a dollar to the first comer.  I no longer believe that there is ANY way to get it to work here, and I need sleep desperately now.\

As I wote yesterday, this is in all probability the very last HP product I will ever buy!

MrRobot:  I have made NO changes to my printer.  None whatsoever.  I am going to turn this thing OFF for now and go and get some desperately-needed sleep.  Perhaps later today I will have a reply in this forum which contains useful information on how to make this bloody printer do more than just take up space on my table.  If there were a ring on it to which I could tie a rope, it might - just possibly - make a usable boat anchor.  As a printer it is useless to me!

Hello Dave,

You could have a problem of the printer being too far from the router/modem.  Also obstructions in between.  They say to not use a surge protector, but plug into the wall outlet.  I have mine on a surge protector, thank you very much!

I also had problems that the driver can’t be found, etc. (for several months after Win 10 update).  So I used the disc that comes with the printer (they say to use the HP site as the disc may be out-of-date).  So I downloaded software and it failed to find the driver even though it is downloaded on the computer.

So, my procedure, as well as I can reconstruct was this:

First I saw a tip to move the computer close to the printer, which I did.  I had the old printer gathering dust in between.  Also you might make sure that the router/modem is close to the printer with no metal obstructions.  Then:

Open HP Smart – it may already be on your list of Charms.  If not, find it at:

Setup > Devices > Printers > (click on) 5660  > Printer App (which opens HP Smart)

In HP Smart along the left margin is a printer symbol.  Click it and find Set up a new Printer.  Work through that.  I didn’t make note of what I did, but it found the driver.

I am not an HP employee; just searching for helpful answers for queries on the forum.

A reply is greatly appreciated, if suggestions help or not, as the multitude of volunteers on the forums respond to lots of queries, which requires a great deal of time.  Good luck

OK.  Thanks again for your time and effort.  In your previous reply to me you mentioned distance between pieces of equipment as possible issues.  My printer is located about four inches from the laptop I am using.  Both laptop and printer are about twelve feet from my router.  My laptop connects to my router via an Ethernet cable.  My printer connects via wifi and I do not see how the distance or the router could cause my problems because my wife (also connected by Ethernet to our router) can use the printer without problems.

It took 42 minutes to delete the HP software from my system, so now I will restart my system and then try to fool with registry and permissions as you suggest.

RichAnt - I sincerely doubt that the distance between my printer and my router is a factor in my problem.  My wife prints without difficulty using the printer and the same router I use.  If I have problems printing because of the distance, I would expect my wife to have the same problem.  She does not.  Thank you very much for your kind reply!

MrRobot: The "permissions" fix seems to have done the trick!  After setting the permissions as you suggested, I went to the HP website and downloaded EN5660_Full_Web_Pack_40.11.1135.  It installed perfectly on the first try.  It took a while longer to convince Win 10 that my 5660 is my "default" printer, and now it works perfectly.  I hope that HP gets my "instant ink" to me soon, my printer indicates that the ink level in my color cartridge is very low!

Thank you again for your detailed instructions.  Back in the 1990's I designed and installed networks for the US Air Force.  The technology and software have certainly changed a lot since then!

I am afraid that I could not recommend this printer to a friend or relative using Win 10!
