If you're using an all-in-one HP (rather than a standalone scanner), my tool is a very easy fix:

(If you're using a standalone scanner, I'll need some additional info from you to make my tool work.)

For ink levels, test page, and printhead cleaning, if your printer is networked (either by WiFi or via an ethernet cable), you can just view the printer's web page in a web browser, from any computer on your LAN. On my OfficeJet 6500, all that functionality is there. I presume & hope the same is true for most or all other models.
For instance, if your printer is at 192.168.1.99 then you would just enter that in the web browser address bar. Your ink levels will be immediately displayed. For the other functions, you can click on the Settings tab, then Device / Device Services.
(The web interface for my Officejet 6500 even supports scanning, but poorly.)
You might want to set it to a static IP, to avoid losing access to it when its IP address changes. (That's a good idea, anyhow.) The web interface supports making that settings change, too, or you can do it through the printer's control panel.

I found a solution that I hope may prove of use.
I downloaded the NAPS2 freeware app. If you use this with the TWAIN driver option enabled, this will scan a document or picture by opening the familiar HP scanning screen, where you can crop, rotate and edit the pic as usual. You can also use the 'tools' section to change the scan settings e.g. dpi (but only effective for future scans, not the one just done).
When you 'finish' this will return you to the NAPS2 screen, where you can do further editing if required, before saving the pic (Image) or document (PDF) with the name and location you choose.
Other than the opening screens in HP Solution Center this appears to me to provide the same functionality, if not more.
I have only been using this for a few days now, but it has provided a good workaround that still embodies most of what was available in HP Solution Center,
Hope this helps

Thanks one and all for your suggested solutions. Sound a bit complicated for an IT dummy but will have a go!
Not sure why HP can’t provide a simpler fix if they want HP printer/scan owners to access their HP Solutions facility? Not very good customer support and will make me think before purchasing HP products in future.
