MY HP 4650 worked great for quite some time.

I have tried everything I can find online to get my printer to print after a Windows 10 update.  It is hooked up wireless only.  It scans just fine but it won't print.  I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled it, power cycled the printer, went through multiple routines taking the ink cartridges out, etc.  No dice.  My Brother laser printer, which is hooked up wireless to the same computer, works just fine.

Is there a way to COMPLETELY remove the HP software and drivers so that I can reinstall it?  I notice that HP Smart doesn't show up in the list of programs when I got to uninstall it.

There are three completely different models listed as a result of the search for "HP 4650"

Chosen for this answer:  HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer series

Installation – Full Feature Software

Important Notes

  1. When available, Use HP Easy Start to install the software
  • When asked, opt for "Full Driver" (exact wording might vary).

  1. No Easy Start?  Look for and Install the Full Feature Software
  • Full Feature Software might have been relocated to subcategory Software-Utility and / or might now be called  Print and Scan Driver and Accessories

Basic Instructions

  • Download-and-Save the Full Feature Software / Print and Scan Driver and Accessories or HP Easy Start Printer Setup for your Operating System version.
  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

NOTES

  • For printer supporting OCR, be sure not to remove the option to install with the full driver.  OCR will be available as “Scan as Editable Text” in HP Scan (part of the full driver software).

  • If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).

  • Both the HP Smart Application and the Full Feature Software can be installed on the same computer – when available, consider installing Full Feature Software first.

I am beyond frustrated.  My HP4650 works fine until there is a  Microsoft Windows 10 update.  The last time there was an update, I just had to remove and reinstall the printer to get it to work.  This time, nothing I do will get it to print over WiFi.  It will scan, but not print over WiFi.  It prints reports and test pages just fine.  I have power cycled my router, reinstalled software, went through the total install procedure.  Now, I have a pile of plastic sitting on my desk that doesn't work.  My Brother laser printer sitting next to it works just fine on WiFi.

I have had many HP computers and printers in the past had had good luck with them.  This is the first time I have encountered a product that just won't work.  HP is a leader in the industry and you would think they may have worked with Microsoft to keep something like this from happening.  I can see from the comments in this forum and elsewhere that I am not the only one with this problem. One poor user had to completely reinstall Windows 10 to get his printer to work.  I have no intention of doing that.

I guess I am going to have to buy another printer.  It won't be an HP.  That's unfortunate because I already have a stock of ink.

One more try - this also sets / checks the TCP/IP setup for you though it is not the same as adjusting the setup manually.

Offline Doctor V5.0.7

Use this version

  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

  • Download and Save the doctor to your computer
  • Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
  • Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts /  let the process complete
  • Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.
  • Check for any difference.

Original Notes – Contributed by ShlomiL

Paraphrased

Connection Issues

  • Print and Scan Doctor Version 5.0.7 creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.

After the Offline Doctor completes…

Verify / Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

OR

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default

NOTES – Selecting Default Printer

  1. Do not select the printer marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”
  2. Do not select the printer marked as “Fax”

Example Default Printer:  Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Net)

ReferenceHP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows) > Step 2: Manually set the default printer

Yes, it is true that sometimes the changes in the File System (Operating System) can be enough that the only recovery is to reload Windows and the affected Software.  This is unfortunate - I've had this happen, too.  In my personal experience, it is uncommon, though it can happen.

Older printers / software might be more susceptible to File System Updates, though I cannot confirm whether that is the issue in your situation.

Stay Safe.

 That didn't work either.

Reinstalling Windows is a pretty severe solution.  Once Windows has been established on a computer, there is a myriad of other programs and files that would be lost.  I wouldn't even suggest that as long as the computer is functional and especially not just to correct a printer problem that shouldn't have occurred in the first place.

@SteveMiller50

You are welcome, though I am disappointed nothing has worked.

True that, I've only had to reload Windows a couple of times just because some piece of stubborn software I wanted would not / could not cooperate.  Not a favorite solution.

One last thing:

If you are using Fast Start, consider removing that for a bit to see if the system can recover by booting using the instructions on Disk as opposed to using the setup that is in memory.

Switch off / on Fast Start

Settings   > System > Power and Sleep > Additional Power Settings >

Choose what the power button does >

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable >

Remove Check (clear box) Turn on fast startup (recommended) >

Save

Close programs (browsers, games, email, etc) and close any open windows

Windows key + X + A (opens Cmd prompt as Admin)

When the command window opens, type / paste the following command and hit Enter:

shutdown /s /t 0

  • Wait for the computer to shut down completely (a few seconds)
  • Boot the computer > Log in > Wait around for a couple of minutes (yes, wait, do not rush) >
  • Try shutting down the notebook from Windows key > Power

Optional > Switch ON the fast startup setting

Dragon-Fur NOTE:

  • Business Notebooks > Fast Boot setup may be enabled / disabled in the BIOS

Shut down the workstation > Power on, immediately tap-tap-tap F10 to enter the BIOS >

Advanced > Boot Options >

Check / Uncheck Fast boot > Save and exit

==================================================================

I might have missed something.

That said, for the moment, I am out of ideas.

Stay Safe.
