Follow the steps posted already for this problem, and when you're at Finder searching, search for this text, ProductImprovementStudy.hptask. If it comes up in your search, drag it to trash and delete it, with the other items listed.

Hi LJ.
If you are a novice, let me offer some guidance.
1. make sure you have a recent backup of your mac using Time Machine
2. Note on a separate device or paper each file you delete relating to this issue (they should all be in an HP subdirectory)
Since none of the HP files are needed for your Mac to run, if you have a recent copy of your system, if you don't like the results you can always use Time Machine to restore the files.
Hope this helps.

I believe a member did say something to the affect that if you see an application you downloaded and it looks suspicious, move it to trash. If you're not comfortable making that decision, then by all means don't. The files I identified and deleted from my computer and were described in my post and were very specific, no guessing. Again, this may not be something you want to do.

I also have an OfficeJet 8600 Plus w/ Catalina 10.15.7 on a mac-mini. I spent 3 hours yesterday with Apple support trying to get my printer to work. We downloaded and installed the "Easy Start" 3x (!!!), unplugged and plugged back in, restarted, etc., etc. and STILL the printer says "Printing - waiting for printer to become available." But nothing prints. I have some mailing labels, etc. I really have to print out. HELP! (And PS: No, don't think HP gives a R 's A . They're too busy spending money on lobbying to get tax breaks etc. while hard-working Americans are starving and being evicted....

See my post #89. I had the same exact issue where the printer would be stalled and got the same message you did. I'm not sure if you have multiple Mac's in your household/office, but we do....and if we had even one of the Macs with the evil HP print driver installed it would put all print jobs on hold.
So again, I followed the process to 1) get rid of the "framework" folder and then 2) get the HP driver and software off of ALL of my Macs (and there are several ways to do this...good suggestions from Cat27 in post #92).
One additional thing I did was at System Preferences/Printer, right click in the printer left box with the printer and select "Reset Printer System". Then REBOOT.
Where I differ with Cat27 is by NOT re-installing ANY HP driver/software. After restarting your Mac, go to System Preferences/Printer/ then add your printer (plus sign), BUT CHOOSE THE AIRPRINT driver (mine is Version 2.0). After doing this, you should be able to print.
I've been printing successfully for the past day and a half with no issues. I can't attest to scanning (not a priority issue for me), but I'm not going to even try until HP gets their act together to fix this problem!
