I purchased it directly with HP, and had to go with their protocol of having replacement machines. And because I was out of the 30 days, I could no longer get a refund.

Eventually I got somewhere, when the "care manager" mentioned a "buy-back", which is basically a full refund, but they didn't want to sound as if I had one the case by calling it a refund.

If HP are now starting to recognise the problem, that will most likely be a part I played as I first purchased the machine in September 2014. And only just got my refund this month. After months of complaining, speaking to technical support agents, forwarding diagnostics reports and sound files. I even had to resort to sending screen shots of other customers complaining about the same issue in the US, where the machine was released earlier than in the UK.

I'd still love to have the machine, but first HP would have to admit there was a problem with the 7640 and tell customers the machine is now completely free of the extremely irritating issue. Might gain them some previously loyal customers back.

Hi 7640noise,

I am so sorry to hear the trouble you have gone through! Do you still have a noisy printer or has the issue been resolved?

Today I received a new power-supply and I'm very happy with it.
The noise is gone !
Thks HP ...

When I called customer service about the noise they told me that the noise was just part of normal operation and there was no fix. I exchanged it once already and the second printer makes the same noise. I am about to give up and just return it.

Hi hollygolightly,

Sorry to hear that can you confirm it is the whining noise like in the YouTube video link shown above? Does it happen when the printer goes into sleep mode?

It happens when it is in sleep mode or if the screen brightness is set below 100% it makes the noise all the time.

Had this problem too and after a replacement of the printer (same loud noise) and a new power unit the noise is rather acceptable, but far from gone ... It still irritates me when it's very silent in my office.
I worked about 30 years in the electronics industry and cannot understand that the subcontractor of HP cannot solve this problem for the 100%. Shame on you ...
PS. The noise can only be heard  when he machine is in sleep-mode.
So ... if there is a final solution for this problem please tell me ...

Regards.

Hi riviered,

I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue. I can assure you that HP does have a solution for this issue. You just need a PS replacement. I will personal message you to get your case number.

FIXED !!!!!

After contacting HP (see prior post) and replacing the Power Supply, the sound is gone.

The part is A9T80-60008 and it's called an "AC Power Adapter."

You pop it out of the printer with a small flat-head then replace. It took two minutes.

The entire process was $0.00 for me.

I am having the same issue with my 7640 I purchased from Best Buy a month ago (2/2015). However, as an additional irritation, the printer refuses to come out of sleep mode when it goes to sleep. The only way to get around this issue is with unplugging and replugging the machine. The noise occurs when the printer is in sleep mode, regardless.

Would a new power supply also correct the "can't wake up from sleep mode" issue as well as the noise issue?

I've already tried "correcting" the router settings for network as noted on this forum, plugging it into a wall socket and not a power strip, and a number of other things.

This is the first time it sounds like HP knows that this may be due to a defective power supply. Please advise if this would fix my issue as well.

Thank you.
