actually the user purchased a wrong cartridge. He purchased a photo black for 564.
However, what is said that without the photo black, printer will combine 3 colors to make black. This is not accurate. This is true for first generation inkjet printers, but not for printers now.
2 issues that determine if black is to be used or CMY is to be used. It is the printer driver and the imaging software used.
Printer driver issue: E.g. to print dark blue.
Some printers will use some black and blue to achieve this effect. This is the ideal scenario. Most printers are doing this now.
Some less efficient printers will use all three colors CMY to arrive at dark blue. Those who used Canon Bubblejet printers 15years ago will be aware of this.
Software Issue: If the black is absolute black FFFFFF or in vector image, high possibility black ink will be used. The printer knows precisely that this is black. Any resizing does not result in loss of quality.
But if the black is part of an image, say jpg, and any resizing will results in loss in quality, there is high possibility CMY will be used instead.
My clarification above is to tell reader that HP printer is not "stupid" or "inferior" as described.
What i want to say is if the driver can activate the photo black, so what happens when there is no photo black?
Option1) driver will ask the text black to be activated instead. or,
Option2) driver will instruct CMY to make up for the black to arrive at dark brown, a wet printout, and consume 3times the ink cost.
Surely HP is not there to rip off the customers in using Option2. I have used many printers, and Option1 is employed. I believe HP printers as well.
So why is there a need for 2 black? usually, the photo black is pigment (waterproof) and the text black is dye (water soluble), or vice versa. But they can have both pigment as well. Small photo black is perhaps to have higher differentiation and higher revenue maximization.

I bought not one, but three, of the wrong ones. I now take the box with me but even then it's a test to find the correct one. The big issue is that we are busy people. When we need to get a project out, going back to the supply store that is often out of my cartridge, driving to the next one, and so is a BIG deal. One wonders if the execs who create these product glitches go through the same hoops when they need to get a project out. Nope, they send someonen else while they continue working.

They corrected this issue by releasing new printers that use only the text black. This 564 (I will call it generation2 or G2) is of the same size as the starter cartridge.
However, they sell 2 types 564-G2(half filled) and 564XL-G2(full).
564XL-G1 is huge (3times size of 564XL-G2). So they are 2 different thing altogether.
So if you are using HP 3070a (2012 printer) and you happened to purchase some old stocks of 564XL-G1, you realize the size will not fit.
But when you manage to purchase the correct size (564-G1), the printer refuse to accept the cartridge simply because the chip info is different. This happens for all the colors, not only black.
HP ought to know that there are old original cartridges in the market and should not lock the printer from using them. But well... I believe the purpose is to prevent 3 party cartridges or user recycling the used cartridges. But in doing so, they screw themselves and the printer owners over, as well as HP cartridge resellers stuck with old stocks.

Yep, we all buy the wrong one first - even the RetroVision salesperson didn't know the difference. But it never happens again! I haven't checked the packaging on the photo black cartridges lately but would naturally assume HP has made all-out efforts to clear up the confusion.

It appears you bought a photo combo pack. The B209a does not use the photo cartridge, see my post here.
I am not an employee of HP, I am a volunteer posting here on my own time.

The HP site has an Adobe user guide for the B209a printer here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?product=3777182&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
if you look at page 17 and page 63 you can see it is obvious that the proper black cartridge is 2 or 3 times the standard width of the HP564XL cartridge I find in the stores. I have one proper cartridge that has 564XL on it and one that has just a 4 on it. The printer was given to me and now I need to find the correct HP cartridge...I would buy from HP on line but how could I be sure it will be the right one??? What is the correct HP cartridge number that I should purchase from HP or any other local store (ie Best Buy etc.)?
Thank you for your assistance!

Also could not find the full size black ink cartridge. Finally called HP Support from Staples. Rep said the 564XL would work even though the b209a was not listed on the side of the box as compatible printer. So I trusted her knowledge. Nope will not work. It will fit, but printer will not recognize.
There is no way this is not intentional. This is not an old printer. So they have my $27 now. They may replace the cartridge, but they won't replace the time I spent looking for the right cartridge at 6 different stores and now the lost time by trusting their rep. Yes I am upset. . Is there anyone with integrity?
Will be changing printer brand after having nothing but HP printers for decades.

I am with you! If I can't get the skinny cartridges in black 564, and have to continue to use the photo black for all my schoolwork I'm having to print out, It's not going to last long! When I use up the last of the 4 cartridges I got right from HP because I"KNEW THEY WOULD HAVE AND SEND ME THE RIGHT ONES", I will proceed to go and get a new printer, and trust me, it will NOT be an HP. Am also planning to get a new laptop in the fall for college and guess what??? there are alot of other brands out there that will take care of you much better. I think HP has been riding on it's "Good Reputation's" coattails a little too long. They either need to get back to quality customer care or get out of the business. I know I wouldn't have a business if I ran it like they are doing.
